Hall of Fame
Tom Wise is a former three-time All-American and three-time PSAC champion track and field student-athlete at Slippery Rock.

As a Rock student-athlete, Wise claimed a fourth-place finish and two sixth-place honors in decathlon competitions at NCAA Division II National Championships.
Â
Wise earned automatic berths in the national meet as a decathlete in each of his four seasons of collegiate competition and also garnered four provisional berths in national competition in the 400-meter hurdle event.

En route to his appearances on the national stage, Wise won two PSAC individual titles in the 400-meter hurdles and one conference championship as a member of a winning 1,600-meter relay team.

Wise set the SRU decathlon school record of 7,162 points in 1998, a mark that still stands. He was also a member of the former record-setting 1,600-meter relay team, and was named in 1998 as the regional track and field Athlete of the Year.

Wise earned four U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honors and was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America selection.

Upon completion of his four-year indoor and outdoor track and field collegiate career, Wise began a coaching career that has seen him serve at Clarion Area and Mercer Area high schools.

As an assistant coach at Clarion from 1999-2006, Wise helped guide his team to back-to-back Class AA state championships in 2000 and 2001 and mentored two individual state champions and two state champion relay teams.

Mercer’s head coach since 2007, Wise has tutored 21 state qualifiers, seven state medalists and 10 school record-holders.

Wise has taught health and physical education classes at both Clarion and Mercer and also works as a personal strength and speed coach.

A 1993 Grove City High School graduate and 1998 SRU graduate, Wise resides in Grove City with his wife, April, daughters Sydney and Ella and stepchildren Kaylynn and Wyatt Mineer.
