Hall of Fame
Bill Beatty (Class of 1956) holds the school record for rebounds in a game with 32 against The College of Wooster during the 1954-55 season. He also ranks eighth on The Rock's all-time rebounding list with 814 (13.3 per game).
Beatty was a team co-captain as a senior, when he ranked 17th in the nation in rebounding.
His post-Rock achievements may be his crowning glories, though.
A 1952 graduate of Slippery Rock High School, he is the man credited with the formation of a varsity football program at SRHS in 1965. He also served as the school's head baseball and golf coach, as well as seventh- and eighth-grade basketball coach, before becoming part of the administration and serving as athletic director, assistant principal and eventually principal at the high school. He retired in 1991.
Prior to joining the SRHS staff, Beatty taught and coached at Ridgway and Moniteau high schools and was a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) football, basketball and baseball official for over 30 years. He served as secretary for both the Slippery Rock Chapter of Basketball Officials (1963-75) and Butler Chapter of Football Officials (1969-74) and was a football rules interpreter from 1975-80.
Beatty also served 31 years in the U.S. Army, Pennsylvania National Guard and was discharged in 1989 with the rank of colonel.
He is a two-time past president of the SRU Alumni Board of Directors and has been extremely active in church and civic endeavors throughout his life.
In addition to his degree from Slippery Rock, Beatty received a pair of Master of Education degrees from Westminster College.
