He started out as the head coach of the Slippery Rock High School freshman team before taking a job as the head coach of the Mountain Jackson High School basketball team. He then served as head coach at Hickory High School, where his teams won five county championships and went to the state finals in 1961.

Webster then began a coaching career in the college ranks. He first spent time as the assistant coach at Westminster before becoming the assistant basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh. He helped lead the 1973-74 Pitt team to a 25-4 record and a Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA tournament.
