Dr. James P. McFarland served as The Rock men's tennis coach from 1974-96 and as women's coach from 1988-96. He compiled a 306-207 record (236-157 men's, 70-50 women's) and had only three losing seasons in 32 years as a head coach.

McFarland was named in 1977 as the NAIA District 18 Coach of the Year, won PSAC men's Coach of the Year honors in 1987 and 1995 and was the PSAC women's Coach of the Year in 1992.

In addition to his coaching duties, McFarland served as an Associate Professor in SRU's Parks and Recreation/Environmental Education Department from 1974-2001 and was the school's intramural director from 1984-2001.
