Slippery Rock University Athletics

Ed Hepe (1954) enrolled at SRU as a 29-year-old freshman after serving in the U.S. Air Force. He turned down an offer to serve as assistant coach under “Pop” Storer in order to resume his football-playing career and set several school records, including a 90-yard punt return against Muskingum in 1953. As a halfback, Hepe led the 1952 Rock team in touchdowns for a position player with four, and was second on the 1953 team with three. He lettered three years in football and track at The Rock.
 
Hepe went on to become a decorated high school basketball coach at both McDonald and Fort Cherry High School. Hepe led Fort Cherry to a state championship, where they became the first school from Washington County to win a PIAA title.
 
Hepe then moved on to coach at Butler High School, where he also served as the school’s athletic director. He finished his coaching career with a 223-83 overall record. As the athletic director at Butler, he was integral in building the Butler Track and Field Invitational, which has become one of the top high school meets in the state.
