Jay Wagner was a three-year letterman in football at The Rock and culminated his playing career as an honorable mention NAIA All-America selection as a senior in 1969.

During his Rock career, Wagner also earned a pair of ECAC, NAIA all-district and All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honors.

Wagner was a team captain in his final collegiate campaign.

He was The Rock's leading rusher in both his junior and senior seasons, the team's top pass receiver and kickoff return specialist as a senior and second leading receiver as a junior.

His 910 yards rushing in 1968 was among the top 20 totals in the nation that season and, at the time, ranked as the best single-season total in Rock football history. He also held the school records for career rushing (1,764 yards) and single-game rushing (236 vs. Clarion in 1968) at the conclusion of his Rock career.

Following his Rock career, Wagner received contract offers from the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets of the National Football League.

Wagner retired at the end of the 2004-05 academic year after 35 years as a fifth grade teacher in the Moniteau School District. During that time, he also coached football, track and field and golf at Moniteau, as well as youth basketball and baseball.

A 1966 graduate of Cambria Heights High School, Wagner received both his bachelor (1970) and master (1973) degrees from SRU.

Wagner is a former member of the Eau Claire borough council and parks and recreation commission.
