Steve Banjak compiled a .576 winning percentage (114-84) against primarily NCAA Division I opponents in 16 seasons (1968-84) as SRU's men's gymnastics coach.
Banjak's Rock teams enjoyed 11 winning seasons and recorded 10 top-four league finishes under his tutelage. He also coached 10 league individual champions, five NCAA Division II All-America performers and led SRU to a sixth-place finish in the 1981-82 NCAA D-II national championships.
Another high-water mark of Banjak's career came in 1975 when SRU won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Gymnastic League (GLIGL) team championship. He was named as the league's "Coach of Year" that season.
In addition to his coaching duties at SRU, Banjak was one of the founders of the GLIGL in 1973 and the West Penn Gymnastic Club in the early 1970s, spent a pair of sabbatical leaves assisting colleagues in the Slovak Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia) and served 16 years as Director of Men for Sokol USA.
A native of Farrell and a 1960 graduate of the University of Iowa, Banjak coached and taught in the West Mifflin Area School District before accepting The Rock's coaching reins.
