Phillips was named an All-American in both 1998 and 1997 in water polo and at one point held the NCAA record for goals per game. He was named the Southern MVP in 1998 as well. He also excelled as a swimmer, earning PSAC Rookie of the Year honors in 1996 and going on to set since-broken SRU records in both individual and relay races. In addition to his outstanding efforts at SRU, Phillips was also a member of the USA East squad and a National "B" Team member in 1998 and 1999.
