Scott Hendry, an eight-time NCAA Division II All-America award winner and four-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion swimmer at Slippery Rock University, was, in the words of his coach, 2009 Rock Hall of Fame inductee Bob Ogoreuc, “is the most decorated male swimmer since SRU has competed at the NCAA Division II level.”

Hendry still holds SRU records in the 100 and 200 butterfly, 200 individual medley and is part of several record-holding relay teams.

In addition to his NCAA, PSAC and SRU honors, Hendry also earned a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly event in the 1997 Scotland National Championship, was a finalist in both the 100 and 200 butterfly in the 1996 Great Britain Olympic Trials and was a finalist in the 100 butterfly event in the 1994 World Cup.

Hendry also competed in Ocean Swim Challenges and Lifeguard competition events in South Jersey.

Upon completion of his collegiate competitive career, Hendry served as SRU’s assistant swimming coach from 1999-2003. He helped Ogoreuc lead The Rock to a 36-12 dual-meet record during those four seasons.

Hendry is the proud owner of two bachelor’s degrees (1997 as an environmental studies major, 2000 as a communications major with an aquatics emphasis) and a master’s degree (2002 as an environmental education major) from SRU.

He served as Aquatics Director for the Butler County (Pa.) Family YMCA from 2001-06, Senior Aquatics Director and Head Swimming Coach for the University City YMCA in Greater Charlotte, N.C., from 2006-09 and Senior Aquatics Director and Masters Swimming Coach for Dowd YMCA in Greater Charlotte from 2009-10.

Currently the Senior Aquatics Director for the Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston and YMCA of Broward County in Florida, Hendry has received numerous certifications from the YMCA, American Red Cross and American Heart Association and other organizations during his career.

Hendry is currently a member of the Regulatory Compliance Committee for the American Red Cross. In 2010, he was recognized by the U.S. Navy for aiding in the establishment of a physical training program through the YMCA to aid cadets in passing their physical fitness tests.
