Hall of Fame
VIRGINIA KELLY GRINDLE (Class of 1960) was a Rock cheerleader and active participant in intramural sports; there were no competitive sports for women at that time.
Following graduation, Grindle was one of the founders of girls high school swimming and diving and synchronized swimming programs in western Pennsylvania and served over 30 years as a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) swimming official.
A former vice president and executive board member of the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Grindle was instrumental in the formation and development of aquatic classes at western Pennsylvania high schools, colleges and universities, as well as through the Pittsburgh American Red Cross office.
Grindle was an elementary and high school physical education teacher after receiving her undergraduate degree and served as an instructor at the University of Pittsburgh from 1968-80. She later also taught at Carnegie Mellon University and Chatham College.
A life member of the PSAHPERD and AAHPERD, Grindle was head women's swimming coach at Pittsburgh from 1968-74.
Grindle is a native of Pittsburgh, a 1946 graduate of Dormont High School and received a Master of Education degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970.
