Tom Carey (1943) earned a total of 12 letters (four in football, three in basketball, three in track and field, and two in baseball) as an undergraduate at SRU. He was one of the standouts on the unbeaten and untied 1939 Rock football team and also captained the 1942 football team.
 
Carey then went on to coach football at Ursuline High School. He built a record of 100-53-8 in 17 seasons. He also coached two undefeated teams and won four City Series Championships. For his accomplishments, Carey was inducted into the Ohio High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984.
