Jack Spates (1975) was a three-time PSAC wrestling champion at The Rock. He held a career record of 108-9-0, the second highest win total in SRU history, and had a career dual match record of 40-2. Spates was an NCAA College Division national champion in 1973 and finished as the national runner-up in NCAA Division I competition a year later. Spates finished his senior season with a record of 37-1.
 
After SRU, Spates took up a career in coaching. He served as an assistant wrestling coach at the United States Military Academy and the University of Pittsburgh before becoming the head coach at Cornell University.
 
After leaving Cornell, Spates took a position as head coach of the wrestling team at the University of Oklahoma in 1993. He led the Sooners to seven top-10 finishes in the NCAA tournament and one Big 12 Conference championship.
