Slippery Rock University Athletics

Fred Powell, an outstanding national and international wrestling coach, directed The Rock mat program to a record of 215-105-4 in 23 seasons. Under his direction, SRU won the PSAC title in 1975 and the NCAA Division II Eastern Regional championship in 1979, 1980 and 1983. Only once during Powell's reign as head coach did The Rock not qualify at least one wrestler for the NCAA Division I national tournament. His teams put together a string of 16 straight non-losing seasons from 1969-70 through 1985-86.
