Richard “Doc” Sauers (1951) was a standout tennis and basketball player for The Rock. In his senior basketball season, he averaged 7.0 points per game, 2.4 assists per game, and shot .857 from the line.

After graduating, Sauers eventually took a job as the head basketball coach at the University of Albany. He held that position from 1955-97 and built a storied coaching career over the 42-year period. He became one of the winningest coaches in the history of college basketball, collecting 702 victories. Sauers led Albany to 11 NCAA and four NAIA post-season tournament appearances. He was named the 1985 NCAA Division III (Albany later transitioned to DII) Coach of the Year. He also led the 1993-94 team to a record 25 wins.

After leaving his position as head basketball coach, Sauers then became the head women’s golf coach at Albany in 1997. He helped the team transition from a Division II program into a DI program. In 2009 and 2010, Albany claimed the America East Conference championship, and Sauers was named the conference’s coach of the year in each year.
