Ricky Porter (1983) was a two-time All-America selection and team MVP in football at The Rock. Over his four-year career, Porter tallied 663 carries, 3,124 rushing yards (4.7 yards per carry), and 13 rushing touchdowns. Porter also totaled 482 receiving yards and four touchdown receptions. He led NCAA Division II in rushing in 1981 with 1,179 yards. Porter also was selected by ESPN as the Amateur Athlete of the Week following a game against Edinboro in 1981.
 
Porter then became the first player in Rock history to be drafted into the National Football League, when the Detroit Lions took him in the 1982 draft. He then moved to the Baltimore Colts in 1983 before finishing his playing career with the Buffalo Bills.
 
After retiring, Porter took as position as an assistant coach at SRU for the 1990 and 1991 seasons. He then took a position as offensive assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before taking the same position with the Denver Broncos. After leaving the Broncos, Porter became the director of player development for the New Orleans Saints until 2007.
 
Most recently, Porter joined the Jackson State University football coaching staff as the director of football operations and the running backs coach.
