Bob Phillips (1950) was an outstanding football and basketball player at The Rock, where he earned eight letters and a pair of all-state awards in both sports. He was chosen as a Little All-America quarterback in his senior season.
 
After graduating from SRU, Phillips spent 16 years in the Pennsylvania high school ranks coaching football, track, and basketball. The highlight of his high school coaching career came with the Montour High School football team, which he led to a record of 92-12-4 during his time their. Six of those teams finished undefeated. Phillips also led Montour to two WPIAL Class B titles and two Class A championships.
 
Phillips then became an assistant football coach at Penn State in 1966, becoming legendary Joe Paterno’s first hire after Paterno took over as the head coach at PSU. Phillips retired from his full-time position in 1986, but continued to serve the program as a volunteer coach for numerous years after.
