Ward earned three All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division honors and four varsity letters as a member of The Rock football team before being named as an All-American by Don Hansen's Football Gazette. He served as a team co-captain his senior season (1993).
Upon completion of his collegiate career, Ward signed a free-agent contract with the NFL San Diego Chargers in 1994. He subsequently played one season each for the Canadian Football League Memphis Mad Dogs and Arena Football League Connecticut Coyotes. In 1995, he was named as the CFL's Strongest Man.
Ward returned to school to complete his undergraduate degree once his playing career ended and received his bachelor's degree in 1998. He then began a coaching career that included stints as head coach at South Allegheny High School and McKeesport High School, assistant coach at Jeannette High School and defensive coordinator at Clairton High School. He was named as the 2010 Foothills Conference Class AAA Coach of the Year as McKeesport's head coach and was an assistant coach of Jeanette's 2007 state championship team.
In addition to serving as head football coach at McKeesport, Ward also served as the assistant vocational director and volunteered his time with the Rostraver Township youth softball and basketball leagues.
Following his time at McKeesport, Ward embarked on a career in professional scouting. He reached the pinnacle of the football world in February of 2018 when he earned a Super Bowl ring as the Midwest area scout for the Philadelphia Eagles after the Eagles won Super Bowl LII over the New England Patriots.
