Tim Nunes (1973) was the starting quarterback on the 1971 and 1972 (he was also the team MVP in ’72) state championship football teams at SRU. In those two seasons, Nunes totaled 2,013 yards, 27 passing touchdowns, posted a 57.4 completion percentage, and also rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns. Nunes set five school passing records during his career. He also played in the 1972 Knute Rockne bowl game.
 
Nunes was also a Tri-State All-State selection as a baseball player at The Rock, posting a .269 batting average and .337 on base percentage to go along with two doubles and six RBI in 24 games in the 1972 season.
 
After SRU, Nunes went on to become the assistant football coach at Butler High School, before becoming head coach in 1986.
