SRU'S PSAC OUTDOOR HISTORY
Slippery Rock finished third at the outdoor meet last year and has placed in the top three in the team standings in each of the last 13 years. The Rock have won 12 PSAC outdoor titles with the most recent coming in 2008.
Â
TEAM TITLE PREVIEW
Shippensburg is the heavy favorite to return to the top step of the podium after being knocked off by East Stroudsburg last spring. The Raiders are projected to score double digit points in 12 different events based on the entry seeds and are projected to score a whopping 201 points if the seeds all held true. Slippery Rock and East Stroudsburg figure to be locked in a tight battle for the runner-up spot, along with Lock Haven and Kutztown.
Â
SRU'S RETURNING CHAMPIONS
Slippery Rock has no returning champions this year. The Rock won two events last spring with the 4x100-meter relay claiming a title and
Drew Layton winning the pole vault. Layton redshirted this season after dealing with an injury during the indoor season and has not competed this spring. Only two members of the winning 4x100-meter relay (
Nicholas Hartwick,
Matthew Crow) are still on this year's roster.
Â
NO. 1 SEEDS
Slippery Rock has two No. 1 seeds entering the meet with
Logan Anderson being the top seed in the decathlon and
Seaton Wozniak being the top seed in the discus. Wozniak is also the No. 2 seed in the shot put and is coming off an indoor title in the shot put.
Â
QUALIFIED IN ALL BUT ONE EVENT
Slippery Rock qualified at least one athlete in 20 of the 21 events with only the 100-meter dash not having any SRU representatives. The Rock have at least two entries in 16 of 19 individual events and three or more entries in 13 different events.
Â
FIVE OR MORE ENTRIES
Slippery Rock has five entries in the 10,000-meter run and the shot put and six entries in the pole vault.
Â
ATHLETES TO WATCH ON THE TRACK
The only individual track events SRU has any athletes seeded in the top five all involved hurdling.
John Juszynski is the highest seeded track athlete with his No. 2 mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Michael Gauntner joins him as the No. 4 seed in the steeple. Former 110-meter hurdle champion
Matthew Crow is seeded third in the high hurdles and fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, while freshman
Austin Kurta is seeded sixth in the 400m hurdles and eighth in the 110m hurdles. Both of SRU's relays are seeded in the top eight and will be expected to score.
Â
VERTICAL JUMPS
Slippery Rock has six athletes qualified in the top 18 spots for the pole vault, despite defending champion
Drew Layton sitting out this season.
Logan Gossard leads the way as the No. 3 seed, while
Christian Crowley is seeded fifth.
Logan Turton enters the high jump as the No. 3 seed, while
Grady Cobb and
Dylan Langdon are tied for the No. 7 seed.
Â
HORIZONTAL JUMPS
Jason Alderson is the top seeded SRU athlete in both horizontal jumps and enters the meet seeded fourth in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump.
Matt Mallon is No. 7 in the long jump and
Matthew Crow is 10th.
Â
EXPECTING BIG POINTS IN THE THROWS
Slippery Rock has a top five seed in all four throwing events and a top two seed in three events.
Seaton Wozniak is No. 1 in the discus and No. 2 in the shot put, while
Zach Gose is No. 2 in the hammer throw.
Connor Brown is seeded third in the shot put and
Logan Parker is seventh, while
Ryan Oleksy is third in the discus and fifth in the hammer and
Zach Gose is seventh in the discus.
Joey Reed leads a pair of top eight seeds in the javelin at No. 5, followed by eighth seed
Ryan Beam.
Â
MULTI GROUP
Logan Anderson has his sights set on the 7,000-point barrier and will look to complete a yearly multi sweep after winning the indoor heptathlon title. He enters as the No. 1 seed.
Jacob Stucchio is seeded fifth.
Â
AWARDS AND HONORS
The top three finishers in all events will be named to the All-PSAC team and the top two teams in the team standings will take home team trophies. A number of other awards will be handed out Saturday as well, including awards for the top scholar-athletes at the meet and Most Outstanding Athlete awards.
Â
QUALIFICATION
In order to compete this weekend, athletes had to meet the PSAC automatic qualifying mark in their respective events. If any event did not have the minimum field size of 20 athletes with qualified marks, the event was filled to the 20th best entry mark in that specific event to ensure at least 20 entries in all individual events. For the multi-event competition, the top 16 scores were accepted.
Â
SCORING
The top eight finishers in the final round of each of the 17 events will be awarded team points in the following order: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.
