Rock set to open indoor season this weekend

The Rock track & field teams will kick off the indoor season with 65 athletes competing over the next three days with 58 athletes headed to Youngstown State Friday and seven multi-event athletes headed to Susquehanna Saturday and Sunday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University will open the 2025-26 indoor track and field season this weekend with 58 student-athletes set to compete Friday at Youngstown State University at the YSU Icebreaker and seven athletes headed to Susquehanna University Saturday and Sunday for the Riverhawk Multi.
 
OPENING WEEKEND
The Rock will send 58 student-athletes to Youngstown State University Friday afternoon for the YSU Icebreaker at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS). A separate group of seven multi-event athletes are scheduled to compete Saturday and Sunday at Susquehanna University.

MEN'S YOUNGSTOWN PREVIEW
The Rock will send 27 men to Youngstown Friday to compete in 10 individual events and one relay.
 
Slippery Rock will be led Friday by seven returning All-Region performers from last winter in the form of Matthew Crow (sprints and hurdles), Zach Gose (throws), Logan Gossard (pole vault), Drew Layton (pole vault), Ryan Oleksy (throws), Bradon Schneider (pole vault) and Seaton Wozniak (throws). Layton earned a pair of All-America honors at both the indoor and outdoor national meets last year and capped his spring by setting the all-time PSAC outdoor record in the pole vault. Wozniak also closed his 2024-25 season with an All-America honor in the shot put outdoors.
 
Returners Benny Whitaker, Kyle Rauchut, Jacob Thompson and Kadin Johnson will lead the sprinters into action Friday. They'll be joined by the highly anticipated freshmen debuts for Gavin Skarbek in the sprints and Austin Kurta in the 60-meter hurdles.
 
Fellow returners Grady Cobb, Ian James and Jason Alderson will lead the way in the jumps with newcomer Kai Lynch also set to make his debut. Freshman thrower Connor Brown will join Wozniak, Gose and Oleksy in the headlining the throws.
 
SRU's distance runners will not compete this weekend as part of their training program coming off the fall cross country season.

MEN'S ENTRIES – SUSQUEHANNA MULTI
• Heptathlon: Logan Anderson, Ethan Folmer, Jacob Stucchio
 
Slippery Rock will send All-Region honoree Logan Anderson along with veterans Ethan Folmer and Jacob Stucchio to compete in the seven-event heptathlon at Susquehanna. The first four events will take place Saturday, followed by the final three events Sunday. Anderson is coming off a stellar freshman year where he qualified for and took 13th in the decathlon at the outdoor national championships.
 
WOMEN'S YOUNGSTOWN PREVIEW
On the women's side, Slippery Rock will send 31 women to Youngstown State to compete in 11 individual events and one relay.
 
The Rock will be led at YSU Friday by a trio of returning All-Region honorees in throwers Olivia Heckman and Becca Martin and pole vaulter Allie Taylor. SRU's distance runners will not compete this weekend as part of their training program coming off the fall cross country season, so All-Region returners Jennifer Cichra, Ruthie Hughes and Tatiana Holt will all sit out.
 
Defending PSAC 400-meter champion Jianna Long will be joined by fellow returners Lydia Reed, Shannon McCullough and Evabella Cox to lead the sprinters Friday. They'll be joined by the freshman duo of Ava Reagle and Grace Lennon, who will make their anticipated debuts. The Rock will also see freshman duo Ondrea Young and Kathryn Morrison make their debuts in the 60-meter hurdles.
 
Twin 400-meter hurdle standouts Madison Smalheer and Marissa Smalheer will move up to the 800-meter run as the lone mid-distance entries this week.
 
Returners Baylee Blauser, Julia Coffaro and Alice Bogia will lead the way in the horizontal jumps, while freshmen Hope Jacob and Tayla Kurzawa are the top entries in the high jump.
 
Allie Taylor will be joined in the pole vault by freshman standout Kylie Eismann, while returners Autumn Stewart and Sydney Hale will join Martin and Heckman in the throws.

A foursome of multi-event veterans will represent The Rock at Susquehanna in the pentathlon with all five events set to be contested Saturday. Miller headlines the group after she posted the No. 7 mark in the PSAC last year. All four SRU entries this weekend are PSAC qualifiers from a year ago.
 
RECAPS AND FINAL RESULTS
Recaps and final results from the Youngstown State meet will be posted to www.RockAthletics.com late Friday night or Saturday morning, depending on when final results are available from the meet. A recap from the multi-event meet will be posted Sunday at the conclusion of the heptathlon.
 
UP NEXT
The vast majority of the SRU roster will break for finals, the semester break and the holidays before returning to action Jan. 16 at Youngstown State. A select group of SRU athletes will compete next Friday, Dec. 12, at the University of Akron. A preview for that competition will be posted next week.
