World Championships Shot Put Results

TORUŃ, Poland – Slippery Rock University assistant track & field coach Jordan Geist earned a silver medal with a runner-up finish in the shot put at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Sunday at Kujawsko Pomorska Arena in Poland.

A former NCAA Division I national champion at the University of Arizona, Geist earned the first World Championship medal of his career with a second place showing Sunday morning after recording a throw of 21.64 meters on his first attempt of the competition.

That effort stood as the best throw in the field until it was eclipsed on the final attempt by Tom Walsh from New Zealand, who threw a season-best 21.82 meters to earn the gold medal.

Geist and fellow American Roger Steen took second and third to round out the medals and give the Americans two men on the podium.

The Indoor World Championship marked the first time Geist has represented Team USA at the highest level as a professional athlete.

He finished the best indoor season of his career this winter with the third best throw in the world with a mark of 22.04 meters, making him one of just three men in the world to record a throw over 22.00 meters this winter. Geist also won the prestigious World Indoor Tour title and took second at the USA National Championships.

Geist is in his first year as an assistant coach with The Rock track & field team, where he works alongside his parents Judy Geist and Jim Geist in coaching the SRU throwers. Both Judy and Jim are in the SRU Hall of Fame after storied careers as members of The Rock track & field program. This winter, Geist helped the SRU men's throwers to break two indoor school records with Seaton Wozniak setting a new shot put record of 18.40 meters and Zach Gose setting a new weight throw record of 19.68 meters.

Slippery Rock put five men and three women on the podium in the shot put at the PSAC Championships with Wozniak winning the men's title and Becca Martin and Olivia Heckman finishing second and third for the women. SRU's throwers combined to score 50 total points at the PSAC Championships across the men's and women's shot put and weight throw events.

The Rock track & field teams will continue the outdoor season next week at two meets with select athletes traveling to the University of Lynchburg and Carnegie Mellon University.
