NEW ORLEANS – Slippery Rock University multi-event standout
Logan Anderson was named the Atlantic Region Male Field Athlete of the Year and assistant coach
Tabitha Bemis was named the Atlantic Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year when the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its indoor regional award winners Monday.
Â
Anderson, a sophomore from Edinboro, Pennsylvania, picks up his first Regional Athlete of the Year award after a breakout indoor season that saw him win the first PSAC title of his career and pick up the first All-America award of his career as well.
Â
He broke the SRU and all-time PSAC records in the heptathlon on the way to winning the conference title with an adjusted score of 5,323 points. Two weeks later, he nearly matched that same score with a mark of 5,314 points at the National Championships. That effort landed him a seventh place finish at nationals and a first team All-America honor.
Â
Anderson now owns the top three heptathlon scores in SRU history, all from this winter, and the top two scores in PSAC history with his marks from the conference meet and the national meet.
Â
Bemis, who is now in her seventh overall year on the coaching staff at The Rock, picks up the first Assistant Coach of the Year Award during her tenure at SRU thanks to her efforts coaching Anderson, along with the other multi-event athletes and jumpers.
Â
This winter she coached Anderson to the top two heptathlon scores in PSAC history while also coaching the fourth place finisher in the heptathlon at the PSAC Championships (
Jacob Stucchio) and the PSAC runner-up in the high jump (
Logan Turton). In total, her men scored 30 points for SRU in the team standings at the PSAC Championships.
Â
She was also vital in helping to lead The Rock women to the PSAC title this winter. Bemis' three primary events (multi, LJ, TJ) accounted for 38 of SRU's PSAC winning team score of 98.5 points. She coached the runner-up in all three events and had four All-PSAC honorees in the three events. Her All-PSAC multi-event athletes Leighanne Swan and Autumn Wyatt, along with her runner-up triple jumper Alice Bogia, all recorded career-bests this winter.
Â
In addition to her role at SRU, Bemis is also heavily involved with Division II track & field nationally as she is currently in the third year of a four-year term on the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Track & Field Committee.
Â
Slippery Rock won the PSAC women's indoor title for the third year in a row this winter and took second in the team standings on the men's side. The Rock opened the outdoor season last weekend and will continue the spring campaigns this week with groups of athletes heading to both the University of Lynchburg and Carnegie Mellon University.
