SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track & field team vaulted into first place after day two of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships Friday from Shippensburg University after The Rock picked up a trio of individual champions.
Â
Slippery Rock moved from fifth place after day one all the way up into the lead through seven of the 21 events with 70 total team points after Friday's action. The Rock picked up 62 points Friday, scoring at least eight points in all five event finals contested on the day. Shippensburg sits second in the team race with 62 points. The Raiders are loaded on the track Sunday and are still the favorite for the team title. East Stroudsburg is third with 42.5 points, followed by Lock Haven (24) and Kutztown (20) rounding out the top five.
Â
The Rock were bolstered Friday by a trio of individual champions with
Logan Anderson winning the decathlon,
Seaton Wozniak winning the discus and
Jason Alderson winning the long jump, all with NCAA provisional marks.
Â
Anderson completed the season sweep of the multi-events after winning the PSAC indoor title in the heptathlon earlier this year. He ran away with his first decathlon title with a career-best score of 7,125 points, topping the 7,000-point mark for the first time and putting a scare into SRU's school record of 7,162 points, set by Tom Wise in 1998. His score is currently the fourth-best mark in all of Division II this spring.
Â
SRU picked up 15 points in the decathlon with
Jacob Stucchio placing fifth with a score of 6,401 points and
Ethan Folmer placing eighth with a score of 5,684 points.
Â
Wozniak claimed the discus title to open his busy weekend after he recorded an NCAA provisional toss of 52.10 meters to lead The Rock to 18 points in the event.
Ryan Oleksy was fourth with a mark of 47.25 meters and
Zach Gose took sixth with a throw of 46.64 meters after placing second in the hammer throw Thursday.
Â
Alderson shocked the field to win his first career PSAC title in the long jump after recording the two longest jumps of his career. His winning leap of 7.39 meters marked a massive personal best and puts him in the top 30 nationally this spring.
Â
SRU also got All-PSAC finishes in both of the other event finals Friday with
Logan Turton placing second in the high jump and
John Juszynski finishing third in the steeplechase. Turton cleared a new career-best and NCAA provisional height of 2.07 meters to earn his second All-PSAC honor this year after also placing indoor. Juszynski led SRU to 11 points in the steeplechase with a third place finish in 9:29.84, with
Michael Gauntner placing fourth in 9:42.16.
Â
While just five event finals were contested Friday, the rest of the day was filled with preliminary rounds on the track to qualify for Saturday's finals. The Rock qualified athletes in four different events, including both hurdle races, the 4x100-meter relay and the 400-meter dash.
Â
Matthew Crow led the way on the track as the No. 3 qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles (14.63 seconds) and the No. 4 qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles (54.94 seconds).
Austin Kurta will join him in the 110-meter hurdle finals as the No. 5 seed (14.73 seconds).
Â
Micah Good qualified for the 400-meter dash finals as the No. 8 seed in 49.40 seconds. The Rock also put up the No. 7 mark in the 4x100-meter relay with
Kyle Rauchut,
Jacob Thompson,
Nicholas Hartwick and
Michael Milot clocking 41.59 seconds.
