Records fall, Rock men take second at PSAC meet

Logan Anderson broke the all-time PSAC record in the heptathlon and Seaton Wozniak broke his SRU record in the shot put to lead The Rock men's track & field team to a second place finish at the PSAC Indoor Championships Sunday.

BETHLEHEM, Pa.Logan Anderson and Seaton Wozniak broke a pair of records to lead the Slippery Rock University men's track & field team to a runner-up finish at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Championships that wrapped up Sunday from Lehigh University.

Shippensburg picked up its 15th straight indoor title with 181.5 points. Slippery Rock took second for the ninth time in program history with 102.5 points to mark the 14th straight year SRU has finished in the top three. Kutztown was third with 78 points, followed by East Stroudsburg in fourth with 75 points and Lock Haven in fifth with 72 points. A total of 13 teams picked up points in the meet.

The Rock took home two major awards after the competition with Logan Anderson being named the Most Outstanding Field Athlete and Jonathan Wess being named the Champion Scholar Award winner. He and Jennifer Cichra swept the academic awards for SRU for owning the highest GPAs of all athletes competing this weekend. Both Wess and Cichra own a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Anderson was named the Field MVP after he broke the SRU and all-time PSAC record in the heptathlon with a winning score of 5,298 points. That tally bumps up to 5,323 points when converted for track size and tops his own SRU record of 5,083 points from earlier this winter and the all-time PSAC record of 5,284 points, which was set by Edinboro's Connor Munson earlier this year. It also vaults him all the way up to No. 4 in Division II this winter and virtually guarantees him a spot at the National Championships in two weeks in Virginia Beach. SRU scored 15 points in the heptathlon Saturday with Jacob Stucchio placing a career-best fourth with 4,771 points.
Wozniak enjoyed one of the most dramatic moments of the day Saturday when he won his first career PSAC individual title on the very last throw of the competition. He led through the first three throws, but was passed in the finals and bumped down to second place. Needing a throw over 18.00 meters to regain the lead, he uncorked the best throw of his career to break his own SRU record with a toss of 18.40 meters. That mark moves him all the way up to No. 7 in Division II and breaks his former SRU record of 18.17 meters. It also will likely guarantee him a spot in the field at nationals.

Slippery Rock dominated the shot put, putting five men in the top eight positions and scoring 21 points in the event. Connor Brown took fourth with an NCAA provisional toss of 16.58 meters and Zach Gose, who broke the SRU record in the weight throw Saturday, took sixth with a career-best and NCAA provisional throw of 16.47 meters. Tyler Ondrusek was seventh at 16.14 meters and Logan Parker was eighth at 16.13 meters.

The Rock picked up 11 points in the 60-meter hurdles with Matthew Crow leading the way with a second place finish in 8.13 seconds. Jonathan Wess was seventh in 8.45 seconds and Austin Kurta was eighth in 8.50 seconds.

SRU had one more All-PSAC honoree Sunday with Logan Turton shocking the field to nearly pull off the upset of the meet in the high jump. He cleared a career-best height of 2.02 meters to tie for the best mark in the field, ultimately placing second on the number of misses. It marked the highest finish of Turton's career and nabbed SRU eight points.

Jason Alderson closed out his exceptional weekend with a fourth place finish in the triple jump with a career-best leap of 14.44 meters. He also recorded his career-best in the long jump Saturday to score in both events.

The final points of the day came from the 4x400-meter relay team of Trey Huha, Jacob Thompson, Micah Good and Kyle Rauchut, which took fifth in 3:23.04.

A look at the SRU results from Sunday can be found below. Full results from the two days of action are available HERE.

Most of the SRU roster will now shift focus to the outdoor season, which is set to begin March 21 at California (Pa.). The SRU athletes with NCAA provisional marks will find out next week if they have been accepted to compete in the National Championships March 13-14 at the Virginia Beach SportsCenter.
