MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team earned runner-up honors Saturday after the third and final day of competition at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships from Mansfield University.
Â
Shippensburg University tied West Chester for the longest streak in conference history with its eighth consecutive team title with 208.5 points. Slippery Rock was second with 123 points to earn the runner-up trophy. East Stroudsburg was third with 109 points, followed by Indiana (Pa.) with 82 and Kutztown rounding out the top five with 76 points. All 14 teams in the PSAC recorded at least four points in the team standings.
Â
The Rock were led Saturday on the third day of the meet by
Jacob VanHouten and
Adam Leeper, who each picked up an individual title.
Â
VanHouten led a dominant showing from The Rock in the 400-meter hurdles as SRU picked up 25 points in the event. He cruised to his first career individual 400m hurdle title in an NCAA provisional time of 52.98 seconds.
Andrew Schroder was third in 54.37 seconds, followed by
Savon Salter in fourth in 54.62 seconds and
Logan Mooney in fifth in 55.64 seconds.
Â
Leeper won the first title of the day for Slippery Rock when he popped a career-best effort in the triple jump with an NCAA provisional mark of 15.00 meters to claim his first career PSAC title.
Jesse Romanchak leaped 13.28 meters to place and pick up an additional point for the team.
Â
VanHouten, Salter,
Monte Chapman and
Collin Darby teamed up to place second in the 4x400-meter relay, which turned out to be one of the most exciting races on the track all day. Shippensburg anchored with meet MVP Andrew Adighibe, who won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, and just clipped SRU at the line. The Rock posted a season-best time of 3:15.57, more than a full second better than anyone had run in the league entering this weekend. The most impressive leg for Slippery Rock was VanHouten's lead leg, in which he clocked the fastest split of anyone in the race at 46.97 seconds, a time that would have won the open 400m by nearly a full second.
Â
Darby scored in both short sprints with a sixth place finish in the 100-meter dash in 10.92 seconds. He ran under 11.00 in both the prelims and the finals, marking his first two sub-11.00 performances of the season. He finished seventh in the 200-meter dash in 22.45 seconds.
Â
Chapman also scored for SRU in the open 400-meter dash with a fifth place finish in 49.44 seconds.
Â
Noah Bostick earned runner-up honors in the 110-meter hurdles Saturday with a season-best time of 14.58 seconds to be the highest SRU finisher outside of the two champions.
Â
The Rock got a third place finish from
Ryan Thompson in the 1,500-meter run to headline the efforts of the mid-distance squad. Thompson came home in 3:57.80 to earn All-PSAC honors for the second time this weekend after also placing third in the 800m Friday.
Â
Leroy McClain and
Brandon Vanderbrook teamed with Chapman and Darby to place fourth in the 4x100-meter relay to open the competition on the track Saturday. The foursome clocked a time of 41.86 seconds.
Â
The final points on the day for The Rock came from the throws, where
JJ Ollio recorded a pair of fourth place finishes and
Jerrod Galloway scored in the javelin.
Â
Ollio was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 15.61 meters and was fourth in the discus with a throw of 44.99 meters. Galloway was seventh in the javelin with a season-best throw of 53.67 meters.
Â
Saturday's competition marked the end of the season for most of the Slippery Rock team, while select athletes with NCAA provisional marks will now wait to see if they earn a spot in the NCAA Division II National Championship meet, which will take place in two weeks in Bradenton, Florida.
Â
SRU has five men with an NCAA provisional mark this season, headlined by VanHouten, who ranks 10th in the 400-meter hurdles and is a virtual lock to earn a spot. Leeper's 15.00-meter triple jump effort today currently ranks 22nd in the nation, which is likely just on the wrong side of the cutoff.
Jeremy Parsons (10,000-meter run),
Andrew Koksal (pole vault) and Ollio (shot put) all have NCAA marks, but are not expected to qualify for the meet based on the current national leaderboard.
