Gose was named to the second team and finishes his career as a three-time Academic All-American after being named to the first team in 2024 and the third team in 2023. Layton picks up his first career Academic All-America honor with a third team selection. The Rock trio are part of a very select list that includes just 45 total male cross country and track & field athletes from all Division II institutions.
Â
The Academic All-America teams are nominated for and voted on by the athletic communication professionals at each college throughout the nation. In order to be eligible, student-athletes must be at least sophomores in athletic and academic standing, must maintain at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average, must rank in the top 50 in the region in their respective event and should have significant athletic credentials, such as All-Conference or All-Region recognition. Performances from cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field are all considered.
Â
All three of the SRU men recognized are field event athletes that competed during both the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons.
Â
The three men's track & field selections to the Academic All-America team give The Rock a total of 14 Academic All-Americans in 2024-25, setting a new SRU record for the most honorees in a single year. The 14 selections tops the previous SRU record of 11 Academic All-Americans, which was set in 2021-22 and matched in 2023-24. SRU now has 151 all-time honorees for the Academic All-America program since its inception in 1970, a number that ranks first among all NCAA Division II schools in the Atlantic Region and ranks in the top 10 nationally among all NCAA Division II schools.
