PUEBLO, Colo. – Drew Layton and
Kanye Thompson earned All-America honors to lead the Slippery Rock University men's track & field team on the opening day of the NCAA Division II National Championships Thursday at Colorado State University Pueblo.
Â
Layton picked up his third career All-America honor and his second career first team accolade when he took seventh in the pole vault finals with a career-best clearance of 5.22 meters. That mark broke the Slippery Rock and all-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference records of 5.20 meters, set by former SRU national champion Cameron Daugherty in 2012.
Â
Thompson earned his first career All-America honor after placing 10th in the preliminary round of the 100-meter dash in 10.14 seconds. He missed the final qualifying spot for Saturday's final round by just one one-hundredth of a second as it took 10.13 seconds to reach the final. By way of placing 9-12, Thompson was named to second team All-America honors.
Â
The Rock men were also represented Thursday by
Logan Anderson, who competed in the first five events of the decathlon. Anderson was having a solid day through the first four events, but was disqualified from the 400-meter dash, receiving a score of zero. He closed the day in 15th place with a score of 2,873 points. His best event was the 100-meter dash, where he ran 11.00 seconds to pick up 861 points. Anderson will compete in the final five events of the decathlon Friday as the lone SRU male athlete in action Friday.
Â
The Rock will also be represented on the men's side by
Seaton Wozniak, who will throw the shot put Saturday on the final day of competition.
