CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track & field team recorded two NCAA provisional qualifying marks, seven Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks and five event wins at the Vulcan Early Bird Meet Saturday at Penn West University California.
 
The Rock sent a limited roster of just 17 men to compete in the outdoor opener Saturday and came away with five event wins and seven automatic qualifying marks for the PSAC Championships.
 
Zach Gose led the way with a pair of wins in the throws with the most impressive effort being his win in the hammer, where he recorded an NCAA provisional throw of 57.25 meters. He also took the top spot in the discus throw with a mark of 46.91 meters.
 
SRU won all three throwing events the team entered Saturday with Joey Reed leading the way in the javelin with an NCAA provisional throw of 61.19 meters.
 
Logan Gossard led a 1-2-3 sweep for The Rock in the pole vault with a winning clearance of 4.70 meters. Christian Crowley and Scott Finch took second and third with matching PSAC marks of 4.40 meters.
 
Matt Mallon rounded out the top efforts for SRU Saturday with a win in the long jump with a PSAC qualifying leap of 6.96 meters. He also took third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.23 meters.
 
Slippery Rock will see most of the roster get rolling in the outdoor season next weekend when the team splits between a pair of meets. Select athletes will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia to the University of Lynchburg and another group will head to Pittsburgh to compete at Carnegie Mellon.
