Day One Recap
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track & field team finished third in the team standings at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Championships that wrapped up Sunday evening from Lehigh University.
Â
Shippensburg used its dominance in the distance events to stay out front Sunday and wrapped up its 14th straight indoor title with 167 points. East Stroudsburg narrowly edged Slippery Rock to finish second with 121.6 points after the Warriors scored 28 points and swept the top three places in the triple jump late in the meet to surge ahead of SRU. The Rock had to settle for third in the team race with 118 points, falling just 3.6 points shy of the runner-up trophy. Kutztown was fourth with 81.2 points and Lock Haven rounded out the top five with 61 points. A total of 11 different institutions scored points in the meet.
Â
The third place finish marks the 14th straight year that Slippery Rock has finished inside the top three in the team standings at the PSAC indoor meet.
Â
The Rock picked up one win Sunday thanks to
Matthew Crow repeating his title in the 60-meter hurdles. Crow matched his own SRU record of 8.07 seconds, which he set yesterday in the prelims, to pick up his second straight title in the indoor hurdles. He joined
Drew Layton, who won the pole vault Saturday, as the two individual champions from SRU.
Â
SRU had 10 men earn All-PSAC honors Sunday for placing in the top three in their respective events. The Rock also recorded five NCAA provisional marks Sunday with Crow being one of those. The other NCAA marks belonged to
Kanye Thompson in the 60-meter dash,
Seaton Wozniak and
Joshua Gose in the shot put and
Logan Anderson in the heptathlon.
Â
Thompson just missed out on defending his title in the 60-meter dash with a runner-up finish in a career-best time of 6.70 seconds. He was beaten only by Kutztown's Michael Fellin, who tied the all-time conference record of 6.65 seconds, which was set by SRU's Brad Mueller in 2008. Thompson's time of 6.70 seconds also dipped below the previous meet record of 6.72 seconds that was set by Andre Carr from IUP in 2020.
AJ Virata took fifth in 6.92 seconds and
Benny Whitaker was eighth in 6.98 seconds as SRU scored 15 points in the 60m.
Â
Wozniak and Gose took second and third in the shot put with Wozniak finishing second with a throw of 17.29 meters and Gose taking third with a season-best effort of 16.90 meters. It marked the seventh straight All-PSAC honor for Gose, who has finished in the top three at every PSAC championship event of his career.
Logan Parker also took eighth with a throw of 15.58 meters to give SRU 15 points in the shot put.
Â
Anderson wrapped up a busy weekend with a third place showing in the heptathlon with an NCAA provisional score of 4,962 points to earn All-PSAC honors in his debut championship.
Jacob Stucchio was sixth (4,309),
Zack Duda was seventh (4,293) and
Ethan Folmer was eighth (4,177) as SRU scored 12 points in the multi.
Â
Virata picked up a pair of All-PSAC honors Sunday with a third place showing in the 200-meter dash in 22.27 seconds and a third place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. He teamed with
Kadin Johnson,
Micah Good and
Kyle Rauchut to place third in the relay in 3:22.80. Johnson also scored Sunday with a sixth place finish in the 400-meter dash in 49.93 seconds.
Â
The final points on the track Sunday came from
Troy Hart, who took fourth in the 3,000-meter run in 8:37.53.
Â
The final points in the field came in the triple jump, where
Ian James led a trio of SRU athletes to scoring marks. James was fourth with a leap of 14.11 meters. Duda was seventh with a mark of 13.92 meters and
Jack Thomas took eighth with a leap of 13.91 meters to give SRU eight points in the triple jump.
Â
This weekend's PSAC meet marked the end of the indoor season for most of The Rock's roster, while the athletes that have met the NCAA standard in their events will now wait to find out if they are high enough on the declared list to be accepted into the National Championships. The NCAA will announce the accepted entries for nationals Tuesday evening. The rest of the SRU roster will shift its focus to the 2025 outdoor season, which is set to begin March 20-22 at the University of North Carolina – Charlotte.
