BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's indoor track & field team sits second in the team standings after the opening day of the 2025 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships wrapped up Saturday evening from Lehigh University.
Â
Defending champion Shippensburg used its strength in the distance races to jump out to a lead in the team standings with 48 points after five of the 17 event finals were contested Saturday. The Rock sit second in the standings with 40 points, narrowly leading third place Kutztown with 35 points and fourth place East Stroudsburg with 33 points. Lock Haven rounds out the top five with 16 points.
Â
Slippery Rock picked up one event win with
Drew Layton winning the pole vault and saw one school record fall with
Matthew Crow breaking his own 60-meter hurdles record on the opening day of the competition.
Â
Layton led SRU to a total of 18 points in the pole vault when he claimed his first career indoor title with a clearance of 4.90 meters. He needed just two total jumps to lock up the win after entering the competition at 4.80 meters. Freshman
Logan Gossard cleared a career-best 4.80 meters to place third and earn All-PSAC honors in his PSAC debut.
Scott Finch rounded out the scorers as he tied for sixth with a mark of 4.35 meters.
Â
Slippery Rock also scored double digit points Saturday in the weight throw, which was the first event to go final early in the day.
Zach Gose led the way with an NCAA provisional mark of 18.66 meters, which was good enough for second place and an All-PSAC finish.
Ryan Oleksy took fifth with a toss of 16.75 meters to grab four more points.
Â
SRU earned five points on the track in the 5,000-meter run when
Troy Hart took fourth in a tactical race in 15:40.08 and grabbed one more point with an eighth place finish in the distance medley relay. The team of
Anthony Robare,
Danick Hinkson,
Nate Pitzer and
Michael Gauntner clocked a time of 10:42.72.
Â
The final points on the opening day came from
Logan Anderson, who finished a busy day by taking fifth in the long jump with a season-best leap of 7.01 meters. Anderson already had four events on his legs by the time he jumped, as he also competed in the first four events of the heptathlon Saturday. He will enter Sunday's final three events in the multi sitting in fourth place with 2,744 points.
Zack Duda is third with 2,906 points, while
Jacob Stucchio is eighth (2,438 points) and
Ethan Folmer is ninth (2,429 points).
Â
In addition to the five event finals contested Saturday, preliminary rounds for the 60-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash were also contested on the track. Slippery Rock qualified at least one athlete into Sunday's finals in all four events.
Â
Crow led the way in the prelims when he broke his own SRU record in the hurdles for the third time this year, lowering the mark to 8.07 seconds. That effort easily won his prelim heat and ended up as the No. 1 time entering Sunday's finals.
Â
SRU qualified three men through to the finals in the 60-meter dash with defending champion
Kanye Thompson leading the way with the No. 2 time in the prelims at 6.75 seconds.
AJ Virata clocked the No. 4 time at a season-best 6.84 seconds and
Benny Whitaker earned the No. 8 seed in the finals in 6.95 seconds.
Â
Virata then stormed back later in the day and posted the No. 1 qualifying time in the 200-meter dash, despite entering the meet as the No. 12 seed. The two-time defending indoor 200m champion posted a time of 22.01 seconds to lock up a spot in Sunday's final.
Â
SRU also earned a spot in the 400-meter dash final with
Kadin Johnson clocking the No. 3 time in the prelims at 49.70 seconds.
Â
With at least one athlete qualified for the finals in all four prelims, The Rock will now have at least one entry in all 12 event finals that will be contested Sunday.
