FAIRMONT STATE CLASSIC RECAP
Slippery Rock opened its 2025 season by going 1-3 last weekend at the Fairmont State Classic. The Rock earned a 26-24, 25-18, 25-21 victory against Elizabeth City State University in its first match of the Classic before losing to UVa.-Wise (3-2), Palm Beach Atlantic University (3-0) and host Fairmont State (3-1).

COMING OUT FAST
Slippery Rock won the first set in three of its four matches at the FSU Classic.

BACK TO THE BUCKEYE STATE
Slippery Rock will be playing its first matches in the state of Ohio since going 3-1 at the 2023 Hall of Fame City Challenge.

The weekend will also serve as a homecoming of sorts for The Rock's six Ohio natives: VonderHaar (Aurora), Yost (Springfield), Kaitlyn Danszczak (Cleveland), Abby Kolcum (Chardon), Paityn Krause (Dayton) and Arielle Walter (Burton).

CORE 4
Chevalier, VonderHaar, Yost and Marley Annis each started all four games at the Fairmont State Classic.

EVERYONE GET INVOLVED
16 members of The Rock's 22-athlete 2025 roster played at least one set in SRU's four matches at the Fairmont State Classic.

GOING FOR THE KILL
The Rock's attack has been led through the opening four matches by Chevalier and Annis.

Chevalier earned a spot on the Fairmont State Classic All-Tournament Team after recording a Rock-best 51 kills (3.40 per set) on a .195 attack percentage. Annis meanwhile went for 34 kills (.110 / 2.27). Highlighted by a career-high 16 kills against Fairmont State, Annis' offensive production last weekend already matched her entire kill total during her freshman season in 2024.

Across the PSAC, Chevalier is tied for second in total kills and seventh in kills per set. The senior began her final collegiate season with double-digit kill totals in three of her first four matches including a career-best matching 19 against UVa.-Wise.

Supplementing SRU's attack so far is the trio of VonderHaar (23 kills), Danszczak (14) and Emry Rumbaugh (16).

SETTING UP THE ATTACK
As was the case for much of 2024, The Rock's setting duties last weekend fell to the combination of Yost and Paityn Krause. Yost tallied 68 assists (4.53 per set) while Krause compiled a nearly identical 62 assists (4.13 per set).

ON THE SERVE
Five Rock athletes combined to serve 16 aces through the duration of the Fairmont State Classic. Annis and Yost accounted for the majority of SRU's aces with six and five, respectively, with Krause adding three. Chevalier and VonderHaar chipped in one apiece.

STRONG UP FRONT
Slippery Rock exited its first weekend of the regular season with 34 total blocks and averaging 2.3 blocks per set.

VonderHaar and Addison Jones proved to be formattable pairing inside as Jones provided SRU with 18 blocks (two solo / 16 assisted) and VonderHaar went for 13 (one solo / 12 assisted). All told, 10 SRU athletes were credited with at least one block at the FSU Classic.

Jones enters the Malone match ranked second in the PSAC in blocks per set (1.64) and third in total blocks. VonderHaar is eighth in the league in total blocks and 14th in blocks per set.

DIG IT
Libero Kara Pasquale seamlessly stepped into the role of The Rock's primary libero, making 74 digs at a rate of 4.93 per set at the FSU Classic. Pasquale, who racked up a career-high 29 digs in the Fairmont State match, heads to Ohio ranked third in the PSAC in total digs and fourth in digs per set.

As part of her three double-doubles, Chevalier made 41 digs (2.73 per set) with Annis (29), Yost (27) and Krause (26) all reaching double-digit dig totals as well.

VONDERHAAR 15th AMONG ACTIVE BLOCK LEADERS
VonderHaar's 271 career blocks ranks her 15th among active career block leaders inside Division II. The only other active athlete from an Atlantic Region school with more career blocks than VonderHaar is East Stroudsburg's Anna Coulter (342).

IMMEDIATE IMPACTS
Six Rock athletes made their collegiate debuts over the course of the Fairmont State Classic in Jones, Rumbaugh, Kolcum, Hayden Deming, Ava Haynes and Alayna Esselink.

Jones and Rumbaugh were particularly impressive as Jones led SRU in blocks thanks in no small part to two 6+ rejection matches while Rumbaugh had 12 kills on a .300 attack percentage in her first match against UVa.-Wise.

DOUBLING UP
Slippery Rock athletes had four total double-doubles last weekend. Chevalier led the pack with three while Krause had one.

NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Slippery Rock has garnered 57 of its last 98 wins (58.2 percent) dating back to the 2015 season against non-conference foes.

COMFORTABLE AWAY FROM HOME
Of The Rock's 27 matches in 2025, 19 will occur outside of Morrow Field House. Luckily for SRU, playing away from home has not been a problem of late. Over the last three years, 26 of Slippery Rock's 33 wins have come in road / neutral site matches.
