TEAM TITLE PREVIEW
Slippery Rock enters the weekend looking to extend its streak of top three finishes at the indoor championships to 14 straight seasons. The Rock have been runner-up seven times since 2016, including each of the last three seasons. Reigning champion Shippensburg, which topped SRU by 64.5 points to win the 2024 title, is again the favorite to pick up its 13th straight indoor title, but SRU and East Stroudsburg are expected to be locked in a three-way battle with the Raiders for the top three spots. The Warriors were third last year, 25.5 points behind SRU, but enter this year's meet with a very slim advantage over The Rock based on the entry seeding.
Â
SRU'S RETURNING CHAMPIONS
Slippery Rock enters the meet with three returning champions from last winter when The Rock dominated the short sprints and won both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes and the 60-meter hurdles.
AJ Virata is the two-time defending champion in the 200-meter dash, but will enter this meet in unfamiliar territory as the No. 12 seed.
Kanye Thompson is the defending champion in the 60-meter dash and enters this meet locked in a tie for the No. 1 seed in what is expected to the be the best 60-meter final in the PSAC in years. Six men have run 6.87 seconds or faster this year and three men have run 6.74 seconds or faster.
Matthew Crow rounds out the returning champions for SRU after he won the 60-meter hurdles last winter. Crow will enter the meet tied for the No. 1 seed with his SRU record of 8.08 seconds from earlier this season.
Â
NO. 1 SEEDS
Slippery Rock enters the meet with four No. 1 seeds, including three on the track and one in the field. Thompson and Crow enter the meet tied for the top seed in the 60-meter dash and hurdles, as mentioned above. The other top seed on the track is distance runner
Troy Hart, who is the No. 1 seed in the 5,000-meter run at 14:41.91.
Drew Layton enters the meet as the No. 1 seed in the pole vault with a clearance of 5.06 meters.
QUALIFIED IN EVERY EVENT
Slippery Rock has at least one athlete qualified in every individual event and has multiple entries in 14 of the 15 individual events. The only event SRU does not have at least two entries is the 800-meter run. The Rock have at least three entries in nine different events and have four or more entries in six different events.
Â
AWARDS AND HONORS
The top three finishers in all individual events will be named to All-PSAC honors and the top two teams in the team standings will take home team trophies. A number of other awards will be handed out Sunday as well, including awards for the top scholar-athlete at the meet and Most Outstanding Athlete awards with one track honoree, one field honoree and one overall honoree being recognized.
Â
QUALIFICATION
In order to compete this weekend, athletes had to meet the PSAC automatic qualifying mark in their respective events. If any event did not have the minimum field size of 18 athletes with qualified marks, the event was filled to the 18th best entry mark in that specific event to ensure at least 18 entries in all individual events. For the multi-event competition, the top 14 scores were accepted.
Â
SCORING
The top eight finishers in the final round of each of the 17 events will be awarded team points in the following order: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.
