VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Logan Anderson earned first team All-America honors in the heptathlon and
Seaton Wozniak picked up second team All-America accolades in the shot put to lead the Slippery Rock University men's track & field team Saturday on the final day of competition at the NCAA Division II National Championships from the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Â
Anderson, a sophomore from Edinboro, Pennsylvania, earned his first career All-America finish and secured a spot on the national podium with a seventh place finish in the heptathlon after posting a score of 5,314 points. That effort was just shy of his converted all-time PSAC and SRU record of 5,323 points that he set at the PSAC Championships two weeks ago.
Â
By way of the seventh place finish, Anderson picks up first team All-America honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He was making his debut appearance at the indoor national meet and his second ever appearance at a National Championship after placing 13th outdoor in the decathlon as a true freshman last spring. At the time, that placing left him one spot outside the All-America honors.
Â
Anderson closed out the seven events of the heptathlon with a strong three events Saturday. He recorded the ninth-best time in the 60-meter hurdles (8.47 seconds) and then put up the sixth-best efforts in both the pole vault (4.45 meters) and the 1,000-meter run (2:53.50). He finished one spot ahead of Edinboro's Connor Munson, who was eighth overall with 5,260 points. Anderson and Munson now own the top four heptathlon scores in PSAC history after their efforts this winter with Anderson having the two best scores and Munson having the third and fourth best marks.
Â
"We are so proud of Logan and the way he competed this weekend," said
Tabitha Bemis, SRU assistant coach. "It's very difficult to put together two really good multi performances in a span of two weeks, but watching him do what he did at the PSAC meet and then come back and almost match that same score here on the biggest stage just shows how special he is."
Â
Wozniak, a senior from Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, earned second team All-America honors with a 14th place finish in the shot put Saturday after recording a throw of 17.09 meters. He was the highest finishing athlete from the Atlantic Region in the competition and picks up his second career All-America honor after also placing 10th at the outdoor national meet last spring.
Â
"It's great to see Seaton add an indoor All-America award to his list of accomplishments," said
Jordan Geist, SRU assistant coach. "He had a terrific season this winter and reached a new level with his performances. We're looking forward to the outdoor season and having the chance to get him up on that podium in May."
Â
Anderson and Wozniak were the lone SRU athletes competing Saturday at nationals. They were joined at the meet by pole vaulter
Drew Layton, who took home second team All-America honors with a 13th place finish Friday.
Â
Slippery Rock will now shift to the outdoor season, which is set to begin next Saturday at California (Pa.).
