YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –
Seaton Wozniak broke his own school record in the shot put to lead the Slippery Rock University men's track & field team in the indoor season opener Friday at the YSU Icebreaker hosted by Youngstown State University.
Â
The Rock men closed the day with four NCAA provisional marks, 11 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference automatic qualifying marks and 14 top 10 finishes.
Â
Wozniak had the highlight of the night when he opened the year with a bang, shattering his own SRU record that was set last winter with a winning throw of 17.96 meters. His effort took the top spot on a podium that included two throwers from Division I Pitt in second and third and bettered his former indoor best of 17.58 meters from last season.
Â
That wasn't the only NCAA mark in the shot put for SRU as freshman
Connor Brown took fourth with a provisional mark of 17.03 meters.
Zach Gose also finished 10th at 14.92 meters to give SRU a trio in the top 10 with at least the PSAC standard.
Â
Gose also took third in the weight throw with a toss of 17.49 meters with
Ryan Oleksy finishing eighth at 15.32 meters to close out five total PSAC marks in the throws.
Â
Drew Layton was the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault and took third overall behind a pair of unattached vaulters. He cleared an NCAA provisional height of 5.05 meters.
Logan Gossard took eighth in the seeded section with a mark of 4.60 meters and
Christian Crowley and
Bradon Schneider went 1-2 in the unseeded section with matching heights of 4.45 meters to give SRU four vaulters with a PSAC mark.
Â
Matthew Crow led the way on the track with an NCAA provisional mark in the 60-meter hurdles. He took sixth in the finals in 8.15 seconds after clocking a time of 8.13 seconds in the prelims.
Austin Kurta joined him in hitting the PSAC standard with a 12th place showing in 8.52 seconds.
Â
The top track efforts were capped by the 4x400-meter relay team of
Jacob Thompson,
Trey Huha,
Kyle Rauchut and
Gavin Skarbek, who closed the night with a fourth place finish in 3:20.37.
Â
Slippery Rock will send three multi-event athletes to Susquehanna Saturday and Sunday to round out to opening weekend of competition.
