SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team will look for its second home win in three games when it takes on California (Pa.) 1 p.m. Saturday at Morrow Field House.
 
Following a week off, The Rock enter with a 1-9 overall record and a 1-6 mark in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play. The Vulcans are hitting the road for the first time in 2024, coming in at 10-4 overall and 5-3 within the PSAC.

SERIES HISTORY vs. CALIFORNIA (Pa.)
Saturday will mark the 106th meeting between The Rock and the Vulcans, a series that dates back to 1921. Cal leads the series with a 64-40-1 record, currently riding a six-game winning streak against SRU.
 
Slippery Rock last defeated California in 2019 when the Vulcans were ranked 10th in the nation. in a 72-61 win at home. Prior to that, Cal created a 35-game unbeaten streak versus The Rock from 2003-19.
 
Slippery Rock has not allowed the Vulcans to score more than 68 points in their last four trips to Morrow Field House.

LAST MEETING WITH THE VULCANS
The Rock were narrowly clipped in their last game against Cal, falling in a 74-68 decision Feb. 2, 2023 on the road. SRU played even with Cal for three quarters, leading 52-50 after three frames. A strong 24-16 fourth quarter effort from California eventually allowed the Vulcans to prevail.
 
Deleah Gibson and Isabellah Middleton spearheaded Slippery Rock's efforts, combining to register 75 percent (51-of-68) of SRU's points.

LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock lost its PSAC West opener at Seton Hill University a week ago, 92-55. Regan Atkins and Kristina Donza paced the offense by scoring 11 points each, while Gabby Jackson chipped in eight points.
 
Kaylin Venick pulled down a team-best four rebounds while Emily Venick led the squad in assists with three.
 
The Rock bounced back from a 31-9 first quarter deficit by outscoring the Griffins 17-13 in the second period. However, Seton Hill's offense, which shot at a 63.9 percent clip throughout the game, was able to pull away from SRU with a consistent second half.
 
LEADING THE ROCK
Slippery Rock's scoring throughout the season has been led by Atkins, who averages 14.2 points per game in addition to 4.6 rebounds and one steal per game.
 
Following the true freshman is Donza's 12.3 points per game. The redshirt junior leads SRU in 3-pointers per game with 1.7 while reeling in 2.6 rebounds per game as well.
 
Junior transfer Endya Robinson's 4.7 rebounds per game lead The Rock in boards, with 39 of her 47 total rebounds coming on the defensive end. Robinson also holds the team's record for single-game rebounds this season with 11 at West Chester University.
 
TOP FRESHMAN SHOOTER IN DIVISION II
In addition to leading Slippery Rock in scoring, Atkins' 14.2 points paves the way among all freshmen in the PSAC. Atkins also ranks 12th in freshmen scoring throughout Division II.

Perhaps most impressive about Atkins' rookie campaign has been her accuracy. The New Castle, Pennsylvania native has shot 50 percent or greater from the floor in eight of 10 games this season. She leads all freshmen in Division II with a 53.8 field goal percentage on the year.
 
Atkins also ranks second in the PSAC among all players in field goal percentage.

MORE TREYS FOR MOYE
Sophomore guard Deryn Moye has not missed a 3-pointer since Dec. 19, now having shot 5-of-5 through her last three games. Hailing from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, Moye has connected on 8-of-16 (.500) 3-point opportunities this year, leading Slippery Rock in 3-point percentage.
 
Moye went 2-of-2 from 3-point range at Lock Haven University and at home against Kutztown University before making her only 3-point chance at Seton Hill. 68.6 percent (24-of-35) of her total points have come from beyond the perimeter this season.
 
PRODUCING TAKEAWAYS
Slippery Rock has forced an average of 17 turnovers per game, while committing just 16.3 of its own. As a result, The Rock rank fifth in the PSAC in turnovers committed and are ninth in the conference with a +0.7 turnover margin.
 
Both Jackson and Kaylin Venick have posted 1.2 steals per game this year, while Robinson and Atkins have contributed 1.1 and 1.0, respectively.
 
With an 18-12 advantage at Seton Hill, Slippery Rock came away with more points off turnover than its opponents for the fourth time in six games. Additionally, SRU forced greater than or equal to the number of turnovers it committed for the seventh time in 10 games this season.
 
ROCK STARS OF RECENT
• Niya Moore recorded the first four points, two rebounds and two assists of her career at Seton Hill.
 
• Tori Johnson scored a personal-best four points against the Griffins, including a 2-of-2 showing from the foul line in the sophomore's first career free throws.
 
• Donza increased her career total with SRU to 167 points, becoming the all-time leading scorer among active players.
 
• Kelley McKnight registered her 150th career rebound at SHU.
 
• Jackson went 3-of-3 from the foul line for the first time in her career against Seton Hill.
 
• Emily Venick made her second 3-pointer of the season, which is the third of her career.
 
• Kaylin Venick shot a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe for the third time this season.
 
• Hallie Raabe garnered the third steal of her career at Seton Hill.
 
PSAC WEST HOME OPENERS
Slippery Rock has won two of its last five PSAC West home openers, most recently defeating Pitt-Johnstown in the 2021-22 season with a 66-52 win. The Rock also earned a 60-57 victory over Mercyhurst University to kick off PSAC West play at home in their 2017-18 campaign.
 
THE ROCK VS. THE REIGNING CHAMPS
A win Saturday would mark the first time that Slippery Rock has defeated the reigning PSAC Tournament champion since Dec. 3, 2014, when The Rock defeated Edinboro in a 66-57 matchup at home.
 
Current Slippery Rock head coach Ryenn Micaletti was on the sideline for that game, serving in her first of two seasons as assistant coach alongside head coach Bobby McGraw.

CALIFORNIA SCOUTING REPORT
After beginning the season by going 4-0, the Vulcans enter Saturday's contest having lost three of their last five, falling to Lock Haven, Mansfield and No. 3 Gannon University.
 
California is, however, 3-1 against nationally ranked opponents, claiming wins against No. 16 West Virginia State University, No. 15 Fairmont State University and No. 21 West Chester.
 
The reigning PSAC Tournament champions recently dropped from the national rankings after appearing in five consecutive editions of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll, peaking at No. 10 in November.
 
The Vulcans attack their opponents as a collective, with six different players averaging at least eight points per game. The offensive had been headed up by redshirt senior Dejah Terrell's 11.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
 
Fifth in the PSAC in rebounds, Terrell has recorded five double-doubles this season. Allycia Harris has also pulled in 8.4 rebounds per game, complemented by 9.6 points per game.
 
While Cal's 38.4 field goal percentage and 27.9 3-point percentage rank in the bottom half in the conference, the Vulcans' defense is sixth in both opponent field goal percentage (.376) and opponent 3-point percentage (.270). Additionally, the Vulcans sit atop the PSAC in forced turnovers, averaging 21.2 per game.

LOOKING AHEAD
Slippery Rock will remain home for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff Jan. 17 when it welcomes in nationally ranked Gannon to Morrow Field House. The Golden Knights were ranked No. 3 in the most recent WBCA poll.
