Rock closes out season with loss at California

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team closed out its 2025-26 campaign with a 91-64 loss at California (Pa.) Saturday afternoon.

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team closed out its 2025-26 campaign with a 91-64 loss at California (Pa.) Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Slippery Rock fell to 7-19 overall and 5-15 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, while California's record improved to 13-17 overall and 9-11 in the PSAC. The Vulcans will travel to Edinboro for a first-round matchup in the PSAC Tournament.

Kayley Joseph-Bernard led The Rock with a career-high 26 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the floor overall, as well as going 1-for-2 from beyond the 3-point line and 1-of-2 from the foul line. Also, Joseph-Bernard ended the game with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Iyanna Wade rounded out her freshman season with an 11-point, two-rebound, two-assist performance. Wade ends the season as SRU's point leader at 14.0 ppg, just the third SRU freshman to complete the feat in the last 27 seasons. Becky Siembak averaged 15.0 ppg to lead The Rock in the 1999-00 season and Regan Atkins put up 15.2 ppg in the 2023-24 season.

Karianna Woods was Slippery Rock's third leading scorer on the day with eight points. Woods also finished with one steal, landing her tied for sixth on SRU's steal list for a transfer in their first year at The Rock with 38.

Alyssa Gillin and Mairan Haggerty rounded out Slippery Rock's starting lineup with seven points apiece. Gillin grabbed two rebounds and dished out one assist, while Haggerty brought down three rebounds, earned one assist and picked up one steal.

Off the bench, Sophia Hook rounded out Slippery Rock's scorers with five points. Hook also finished with one rebound, one assist and one steal.

The Vulcans put the game out of reach early as they began the game on a 23-0 run. California pushed its lead at halftime to 28 points (49-21) and finished the game with a 27-point advantage (91-64).

Slippery Rock ended the game shooting 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field overall, 20 percent (4-for-20) from the 3-point line and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the charity stripe. 

California finished the game shooting 57.4 percent (35-of-61) from the floor overall, 47.6 percent (10-for-21) from beyond the arc and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the foul line. 

Hope Hawkins (22), Kennedy Bankett (19) and Trinity Balog (18) led the Vulcans in scoring.

Saturday's game wrapped up the collegiate careers of Gillin, Joseph-Bernard, Woods, Deryn Moye and Laney Bone.

Gillin and Joseph-Bernard both end their time at The Rock ranked among the programs best in multiple statistical categories. 

Gillin finished her career fourth in blocks (67), 13th in the 3-pointers made (87) and 13th in 3-point percentage (.312). Joseph-Bernard ends her career seventh in blocks (67), 12th in defensive rebounds (321) and 24th in steals (91) at Slippery Rock.
