EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's indoor track and field team rallied back in the final event to earn a runner-up finish in the team standings Sunday on the final day of the 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Championships from Edinboro University.
Â
The Rock entered the 4x400-meter relay in third place in the team standings, trailing Cal U by three points and needing to beat the Vulcans by at least three points in the relay to move up to secure the runner-up trophy.
Madison Olsen,
Lorna Speigle,
Rachel Veneziano and
Morgan Donatelli got the job done, taking third in 4:02.06 and beating Cal U by three places to vault The Rock into a tie for second in the final standings.
Â
The thrilling finish added one more highlight, and one more trophy, to the career of legendary head coach
John Papa. Papa, who announced in the fall that this would be his last year at SRU before he retires in June, coached his final indoor championship this weekend.
Â
Edinboro used a dominant showing from a trio of distance runners to win its first indoor title with 96 total points. Those points came from just seven total athletes with 85 points coming in the five distance races and one multi-event athlete scoring the other 11 points in the pentathlon and the high jump. The Scots scored 23 points in the 5,000m, 22 points in the 3,000m and 20 in the mile while also winning the DMR and the 800m.
Â
Slippery Rock and Cal U tied for second with 76 points, which marked an improvement for both teams based on seeding entering the weekend. Millersville took fourth with 63 points, followed by Kutztown in fifth with 60 points and Shippensburg in sixth with 57 points. A total of 15 schools scored at least nine points at the meet.
Â
The individual highlight of the day Sunday came from
Cecily Greggs, who won her third career title in the high jump after clearing a personal best 1.74 meters. That mark vaulted Greggs all the way up to No. 9 on the Division II national list and likely punched her ticket to the National Championships March 11-12 in Pittsburg, Kansas.
Â
Donatelli picked up two All-PSAC finishes (top three in each event) Sunday, adding the open 400-meter dash to the 4x400m relay. She took third in the 400m in 58.18 seconds and was also sixth in the 200-meter dash in 26.15 seconds to cap her day with 15 total points for the team.
Â
SRU also got an All-PSAC showing and an NCAA provisional effort from
Trinity Clark, who took third in the shot put with a career-best throw of 14.01 meters.
Jena Reinheimer took eighth with a toss of 12.71 meters to give SRU seven points in the event.
Â
Marianne Abdalah picked up her second All-PSAC award of the weekend with a third place showing in the 3,000-meter run Sunday after clocking a time of 10:07.66. Abdalah was also second in the 5,000-meter run Saturday to score 14 points for the team.
Â
Slippery Rock's final points Sunday came in the 60-meter dash, where The Rock put two athletes in the top five and scored nine points.
Samantha Gilbert finished fourth in 7.88 seconds, while
Rayna Stevenson was fifth in the same time.
Â
Sunday's meet marked the end of the indoor season for everyone but Greggs, who will await her acceptance into the national meet. The Rock will now turn their focus to the outdoor season, which is set to begin with back-to-back meets in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina March 11-12 and March 17-19.
