SCOUTING THE ROCK
LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock controlled Tuesday's non-conference match at Salem on the way to a 25-15, 25-8, 25-21 victory.
Â
A LOOK AT THE PSAC WEST STANDINGS
With six PSAC West matches remaining in the regular season Slippery Rock finds itself right in the thick of the playoff hunt. The top four teams in both the PSAC West and PSAC East standings at the conclusion of the regular season qualify for the PSAC Tournament.
Â
The Rock enters the weekend tied for fifth in the Western Division standings alongside Seton Hill and California with matching 4-6 league records, two matches in back of fourth-place IUP (6-4).
Â
A pair of wins, or even a two-match split, this weekend would go a long way in keeping The Rock's postseason hopes realistically alive. SRU last qualified for the conference tournament in 2008.
Â
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Slippery Rock has excelled when playing at the friendly confines of Morrow Field House this year as SRU has won three of its four home matches in 2022. The Rock's home victories have come against Indiana, Mercyhurst and Edinboro with the loss being to Gannon.
Â
Five of Slippery Rock's final seven matches of the regular season are slated to be played at Morrow Field House. If SRU wins two more home matches this season it would mark The Rock's second year with a winning home record over the last four completed seasons – Slippery Rock also went 6-4 at Morrow Field House in 2018.
Â
A LOOK AT BACK AT THE 1ST UPJ MATCH
The Rock's three-set win at Pitt-Johnstown launched stretch of solid play for SRU in which it has gone 5-4 over its last nine matches.
Â
The win saw Slippery Rock serve nine aces and post a .257 attack percentage all the while limiting the Mountain Cats to just one ace and a .121 attack percentage.
Â
Individually,
Abigail Koeller led the way with 18 kills, one off her career-high, to go with two aces. Koeller's 18 kills were the most in a single-match by a Rock athlete this season. The trio of
Maria Lucas,
Jaeden Yost and
Erica Selfridge matched Koeller with two-ace matches as well.
Â
ROCK TRENDS
• SRU has a .197 attack percentage over the nine matches, up from its season average of .167.
Â
• Since recording just one ace in its loss against Clarion on Sept. 23, Slippery Rock has served at least five aces in eight of its past nine matches.
Â
• Despite playing just a fraction of her matches at home this season (4-of-23), nearly half of
Kate Lachendro's aces have come at Morrow Field House (13-of-27).
Â
• In addition to have at least one ace in 10 straight matches, Lucas is also coming off a season-best 11-dig performance in the Salem win.
Â
• Selfridge has produced 11 or more kills in six of The Rock's last eight matches. She is also averaging 12.7 digs per match since Sept. 30.
Â
• Perhaps no player has been as important to The Rock's success than Koeller. She has played in eight of SRU's nine wins this year and averages 11.6 kills, 11.4 digs, 1.0 digs and 1.3 blocks per match with a .264 attack percentage in those victories.
Â
•
Abigail Nigon had one block at Salem to send her streak of matches with at least one rejection to 12.
Â
•
Callie Chevalier has smashed through any type of "Rookie Wall" that often comes during the middle and later stages of a freshman season as she has averaged 9.4 kills and 2.8 blocks per match over her last eight appearances with a .214 attack percentage in the stretch.
Â
• In what was an all-around team victory, several reserves played key roles in the win at Salem.
Paige Weeder tallied a season-high four kills,
Lauren VonderHaar matched her personal-best with three kills,
Syd Montana served her second ace of the year and
Stephanie O'Donnell posted her highest kill total since Sept. 10.
Â
SELFRIDGE IN RARE COMPANY
With a minimum of seven matches left in her sophomore season, Selfridge already finds herself among some of the best athletes in program history. To date, she has recorded 470 career kills. There are just eight other athletes in program history that have recorded more kills over their freshman and sophomore seasons.
Â
Kills in Fr./So. Seasons
1-Anastasia Urbanik (2005-06 / 930)
2-Nikki St. Antoine (1993-94 / 844)
3-Michele Ide (1999-00 / 790)
4-Danielle Snyder (1995-96 / 761)

7-Laurie Flynn (1991-92 / 705)
8-Louise Schultz (2004-05 / 621)
9-Erica Selfridge (2021-22 / 470)
Â
LUCAS' ACE STREAK UP TO 10
Following a one-ace match against Salem, Lucas has increased her streak of consecutive matches with at least one ace to 10. Dating back to the 2008 season there have been just one Slippery Rock athlete with a longer ace streak - Lauren Rojek went 11 straight matches with an ace in 2013.
Â
Ace Streaks (Since 2008)
1-Lauren Rojek: 11 (2013)
t2-Maria Lucas: 10 (2022)
t2-Zoe Rivet: 10 (2016)
4-Stacey Domer: 9 (2009)
t5-Erica Selfridge: 8 (2021)
t5-Kaylee Smith: 8 (2009)
Â
NIGON CLIMBING CAREER BLOCKS LEDGER
Nigon enters the weekend with 166 career blocks - just four away from surpassing Megan Smith (2004-05) for the No. 20 spot on SRU's career block leaderboard. Â
Â
In what has been an outstanding senior campaign, Nigon currently ranks second in the PSAC in total blocks (80) and third in blocks per set (1.05). At her current rate, Nigon is on pace to finish the year with 104 blocks which would give her 190 for her career. 190 blocks would serve as the 17th highest total in program history.
Â
There have been eight athletes to have 100-block seasons at SRU: Smith, Michelle Hren, Kelly Gress, Erin Green, Anastasia Urbanik, Laurie Flynn, Hayley Wilson and Keira Peoples.
Â
THE ROCK ATTACK
In addition to Selfridge and Koeller, Slippery Rock's attack also features three others with over 100 kills in Chevalier (104),
Chelsie Wheeler (117) and
Alayna Chizmar (104). Additionally, the  middle hitter combo of Nigon and
Mary Berger have provided SRU with 81 and 84 kills, respectively. Berger's 84 kills are already a career-high.
Â
Serving duties fall to the duo of Yost and
Peytan Gullickson. Yost, a freshman, has distributed 474 assists over 23 starts while Gullickson adds 308 assists.
Â
When SRU serves the talented quartet of Lachendro, Selfridge, Yost and Lucas are all threats to produce aces. Lachendro and Selfridge are tied for the team lead in aces with 27 followed by Yost (26) and Lucas (22).
Â
DEFENSIVE MINDED
Guiding The Rock's defensive efforts have been Nigon with her aforementioned block prowess and Lachendro who leads the PSAC, and ranks seventh in all of Division II, with 463 digs (5.45 per set).
Â
O'Donnell and Berger are tied for second on the team with 38 blocks apiece with Koeller and Chevalier close behind at 26 each.
Â
Selfridge (281), Yost (226) and Koeller (209) all have over 200 digs this season as well for a Rock team that ranks 12th in the nation in digs per set.
Â
SISTERLY RIVALRY
The Clarion will match will feature two sets of sisters on opposite sides of the net from one another as
Erica Selfridge's sister, Abigail, and
Maria Lucas' sister, Sophia, are both members of the Clarion volleyball roster.
Â
All told, there will be four sister pairings on the court/sidelines Friday. In addition to the Lucas' and Selfridge's Slippery Rock also has twin sisters Mary and
Jiley Berger on their roster in addition to sophomore outside hitter
Paige Weeder and her sister Hunter, who is a student assistant for SRU.
