LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's cross country team took fifth place at the Lock Haven Invite Saturday at the West Branch Cross Country Course at Lock Haven University.

The Rock finished one spot higher than their regional rank in a field that included the top five ranked teams in the Atlantic Region.

Walsh, which entered the meet ranked 15th nationally and fourth in the Midwest Region, placed five runners in the top 18 to run away with the team title with 52 points. The next five places were occupied by the top five ranked teams in the Atlantic Region.

Charleston, which entered the meet ranked fourth in the region, topped the regional teams in second place with 125 points. Seton Hill was ranked third entering the meet but finished second among the regional squads in third place with 132 points. Edinboro, the top ranked team in the region, finished in fourth with 142 points and Slippery Rock rounded out the top five with 178 points. The Rock were ranked fifth in the region, one spot below Davis & Elkins, but edged D&E by one point Saturday.

That finish is even more impressive considering SRU was without the services of its full team as Lexie Firment and Steph Keelon both sat out this week.

The LHU Invite marked the largest field of the season for SRU as a total of 22 complete teams and 249 runners competed in the 6,000-meter race.

Marianne Abdalah led SRU on Saturday with a 17th place finish after covering the course in 22:17. Anna Igims was 32nd in 22:5 as the second finisher for The Rock.

Katie Plassio came home third for SRU in 37th place in 23:01. Madison Murtland was 43rd in 23:09 and Chelsea Hunt rounded out the scorers in 76th in 24:04.

Chloe Kurpakus was 119th in 25:07 and Kate Aldrich was 131st in 25:18 to round out the top seven finishers for The Rock.

Slippery Rock will take next weekend off before returning to action Oct. 9 for its only home race of the season at the Bill Lennox Invite at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.
