SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team will close out its 2021 season with six games over the next four days with a non-conference home doubleheader Wednesday against Fairmont State University and a four-game Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division weekend series against Mercyhurst University.
The Rock opens the week by welcoming Fairmont State to the SRU Softball Complex Wednesday with first pitch of game one slated for 2 p.m.
Following an off day, SRU then embarks on a four-game set against Mercyhurst. The first two games of the series will be played at MU 2:30 p.m. Friday before returning home to complete the series 1 p.m. Saturday.
SPECTATOR POLICIES
Per the Slippery Rock spectator policy (available
HERE), only a limited number of pre-approved SRU fans will be admitted at outdoor events with each student-athlete and coach receiving four tickets to each home event. Visiting teams will be given two tickets per student-athlete and coach.
There will be no open admission to the public and anyone not on the approved list for each event. All fans will be required to be temperature checked and wear masks for the entire duration of their time inside SRU facilities.

SENIOR DAY
Prior to first pitch Saturday's twin bill, the Slippery Rock softball team will honor two graduating seniors,
Alexa Guglielmino and
Leah Vith, for their contributions to the program over their careers. Guglielmino and Vith, have made a lasting impact on the field.
Guglielmino enters play Wednesday having started 162 consecutive games, an SRU Softball program record. Additionally, the senior ranks second in career triples (9) while tallying a .263 career batting average, four home runs, 19 doubles, 52 RBI and 72 runs scored.
Vith has appeared in 98 games with 87 starts, including starting each of the last 80 games she has appeared in behind the plate. The Rock catcher has a .272 career batting average along with recording two triples, five home runs, 12 doubles, 28 runs scored and 39 RBI.

SERIES HISTORY
Fairmont State leads the all-time series, 4-0, over Slippery Rock in a series that dates back to the 2009 season.
SRU and Mercyhurst are tied, 38-38, in the all-time series with The Rock winning six of the last seven matchups between the two programs.

SCOUTING THE ROCK

LAST TIME OUT – Slippery Rock lost the final two games of its four-game PSAC West series against the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. The Mountain Cats took game one, 8-0, in five innings before completing the sweep with a 4-2 win in game two.
Vith and
Erin Gardner led The Rock offense over the two games, recording one RBI apiece while Gardner, Guglielmino,
Kaitlyn Bowman,
Regan Hozak,
Julianna Hutchinson and
Lexie Zavarelle each tallied a hit.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE – Gardner leads the SRU offense on the season, batting .308 (37-for-120) with five doubles, seven RBI and 20 runs scored.
Anna Villies is next, hitting .306 (30-for-98) with six doubles, 12 RBI, 13 walks and 21 runs scored.
Vith leads Slippery Rock in home runs (2) and RBI (17) along with tallying four doubles and a triple.
Cami Fisk is batting .294 (30-for-102) with a home run, three doubles and 14 RBI in addition to Guglielmino raising her season batting average to .280 (28-for-100) with a triple, a home run, four doubles and 10 RBI to round out The Rock's top performers at the plate.

IN THE CIRLCE – Kelsi Anderson (4-8, 2.80 ERA) leads the SRU pitching staff in wins (4), ERA (2.80), complete games (3), innings pitched (90), walks (28) and strikeouts (85).
Additionally, Anderson's 85 strikeouts this season is the second-highest total by a freshman in a single-season in program history. Courtney Conron (2004-07) holds the program record for strikeouts by a freshman in a season with 95.
Chloe Sharman (3-7, 3.01 ERA) has proved to be a steady presence in the circle for Slippery Rock in 2021. The sophomore has struck out 66 batters in 74.1 innings of work in addition to picking up the lone save by a Rock pitcher this season.
Sharman is coming off a week in which she tallied the best performance of her career, recording a complete-game, three-hit shutout while tying a career-high in strikeouts with six against Pitt-Johnstown.
Rounding out The Rock pitching staff is
Claire Zimmerman (3-9, 4.98 ERA) who has allowed 54 runs, 42 being earned, on 78 hits while striking out 30 batters.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH – Maggie Moore has found success against Mercyhurst in her career, tallying four hits in 13 at-bats (.307) including a double and two RBI.

ROUNDING THIRD – Rounding out the top performers at the plate for Slippery Rock this season is the trio of Bowman, Moore and Zavarelle.
Bowman is batting .308 (12-for-39) with five RBI while Moore has added 14 hits in 54 at-bats (.259) including two doubles while driving in 10 RBI. Zavarelle is hitting .304 (7-for-23) with a triple, an RBI and four runs scored.
Courtney Hoffman enters the week with three hits in her last eight at-bats (.375) while
Julianna Hutchinson turned in a solid series against Pitt-Johnstown, going 4-for-11 (.364) with a run scored.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS
The Fairmont State lineup is led by Emily Riggs who is batting .397 (27-for-68) with a home run, a triple, eight doubles, 14 RBI and 18 runs scored. Riggs is joined by Haley McDaniel who has a .361 batting average (30-for-83) including a triple and four RBI. Andie Baughman has been a consistent power threat in 2021 for the Falcons, recording four home runs, eight doubles and 25 RBI.
In the circle, Caitlyn Kassay (5-2, 1.49 ERA) has logged 51.2 innings pitched, allowing just 18 runs, 11 being earned, while striking out 34 batters. Cierra Chastain (8-5, 2.16 ERA) has pitched a rotation-high 74.2 innings, striking out 69 and yielding just a .201 batting average against.

SCOUTING THE LAKERS
Madison Fry is hitting .430 (46-for-107) to lead the Mercyhurst lineup including a triple, five doubles, five RBI and 23 runs scored. Cheyenne Hindman has 36 hits in 97 at-bats (.371) in addition to tallying three home runs, eight doubles and 20 RBI.
The quartet of Marisa Cartellone, Allison Dejidas, Chloe McQuestion and Sarah Koscho have provided power to the Laker lineup, combining for 24 home runs and 72 RBI.
Mikaela Schramski (5-4, 5.22 ERA) has recorded a rotation-high 60.1 innings pitched, allowing 35 runs, 27 being earned, on 64 hits. Cheyenne Hindman (2-5, 6.53 ERA) has pitched 40 innings, yielding 38 runs, 29 being earned, on 51 hits while striking out 28 batters.
