Rock set for six-game week vs. IUP and Seton Hill

The Slippery Rock softball team will jump back into PSAC West competition with six games this week. The Rock will play a doubleheader Tuesday at Indiana before beginning a four-game series with Seton Hill.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team will jump back into Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition with six games this week as The Rock will play a doubleheader at Indiana University (Pa.) before beginning a four-game series with Seton Hill University.
 
Slippery Rock and IUP will play twice Tuesday. The Rock then travels to Seton Hill for a doubleheader Wednesday before hosting the Griffins for two games Saturday at the SRU Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. all three days.
 
SPECTATOR POLICIES
Per the Slippery Rock spectator policy (available HERE), only a limited number of pre-approved SRU fans will be admitted at outdoor events with each student-athlete and coach receiving a set number of tickets. There will be no open admission for any events. No visiting team fans will be permitted at any events at SRU this spring.
 
All fans will be temperature checked at the gate and will have to be checked off the pre-approved list to receive admission. All fans will be required to wear masks the entire duration of their time inside SRU facilities.
 
Indiana is allowing spectators at outdoor events this spring. Any fans visiting Ruth Podbielski Field are asked to keep socially distant from each other, participating teams, student-athletes, school officials and other game day personnel. Seton Hill is also allowing spectators for all 2021 spring sporting events. Masks must be worn at all times. Social distancing is to be maintained outside of the family group and there is no tailgating or gatherings pre or post game. Click HERE to view the entire policy.

SERIES HISTORY
The Crimson Hawks hold a 76-41 advantage in the all-time series. However, The Rock has won five of their last 10 contests against Indiana. Seton Hill has a slight 16-13 edge over Slippery Rock in the all-time series although SRU has an 8-6 home record against the Griffins.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
LAST TIME OUT – Slippery Rock opened its 2021 campaign March 5 with two losses against Indiana (Pa.). SRU jumped out to an early six-run lead in the opener before losing 10-7 followed by a 10-3 loss in game two.
 
STEPPING TO THE PLATE – In her first contests as a member of the program, Erin Gardner made a strong first impression at the plate against IUP as she combined to go 5-for-7 over the doubleheader with two runs scored, one RBI and a pair of walks.
 
Fellow newcomer Cami Fisk also had a great beginning to her Rock career as the Ohio Wesleyan transfer went 3-for-6 against the Crimson Hawks with one double.
 
Leah Vith and Regan Hozak had two RBI apiece in The Rock's first doubleheader of the season as well with Hozak also scoring twice and stealing one base.
 
Kaitlyn Bowman and Anna Villes rounded out Slippery Rock's top performers against IUP as Bowman collected three hits in the two games while Villies scored two runs. 
 
Vith is 5-for-12 (.417) against Seton Hill over her career.
 
IN THE CIRCLE – Chloe Sharman (0-0), Claire Zimmerman (0-2) and Kelsi Anderson (0-0) all saw action in the circle in The Rock's season-opening doubleheader.
 
Sharman served as The Rock's game one starter. She provided SRU with four innings, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts.
 
Zimmerman pitched 6.2 innings against IUP as she saw time as both a reliver and a starter. In the two games pitched, Zimmerman recorded five strikeouts and gave up 10 runs on nine hits and five walks.
 
In what was her first pitches as a collegiate athlete, Anderson went 3.1 innings and held opponents to a .211 batting average against while striking out five Crimson Hawks. All five of her runs allowed were unearned.
 
MILESTONE WATCH – After starting both games against IUP, Rock centerfielder Alexa Guglielmino now trails Katie Kaiser (2013-16) by 18 games for the longest consecutive games started streak in program history. Additionally, with 18 more appearances this season, Guglielmino would tie Kaiser for the second-most consecutive games played for an SRU softball player.

SCOUTING THE CRIMSON HAWKS
IUP turned in a solid performance at the plate in the first two games of the season against The Rock as Indiana batters accounted for 20 runs on 19 hits. Six different Crimson Hawks drove in two or more runs versus Slippery Rock.
 
Haleigh Zimmerman led the way for Indiana by going 5-for-10 over the doubleheader with two runs and two RBI. Ashley Renzi and Hope Jones added three hits apiece with Renzi also scoring four times. Sara Hull scored five runs and drove in a team-best three RBI.
 
Bella Bucy (1-0) and Amanda Fischer (1-0) paced IUP's efforts in the circle. Fischer totaled seven strikeouts and did not allow an earned run while Bucy scattered three runs over six innings in a complete-game victory.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFINS
The Griffins opened the year by taking three of four games from Shippensburg University.
 
Freshman Nina Grandey leads the Griffins in hitting with a .583 batting average (7-for-12) and a .615 on-base percentage in addition to slugging .667 with three RBI.
 
Christina Skrabak has been Seton Hill's primary run producer early on with six RBI. Of her five hits this season, two have been home runs and two more have been doubles. Jenna Osikowicz has recorded eight hits in her first 14 at-bats.
 
Seton Hill's pitching staff is led by Lauren Dellett and Logan Hartman. Dellett is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts. Hartman is 1-0 with five strikeouts and an ERA of just 0.91. Opponents are batting just .222 against SHU pitchers this season.
 
UP NEXT
Slippery Rock will play a four-game series against California University (Pa.) March 26-27. The Rock will host the Vulcans for two games March 26 before traveling to Cal U on March 27.
