Â
LACHENDRO AMONG NATION'S BEST
Slippery Rock libero
Kate Lachendro enters the weekend ranked second in Division II in total digs at 388, just one behind Audrey Francis of Wheeling University for best in the nation.
Â
Lachendro, who also ranks 11th in the country with 5.88 digs per set, has recorded 20 or more digs in 11 of The Rock's last 14 matches.
Â
SIBLING RIVALRY
A pair of sisters will play a big factor in Saturday's match as Abigail and
Erica Selfridge will be on opposite sides of court.
Â
Just a freshman, Erica has made an immediate impact for The Rock this season as SRU's top outside hitter. Through 17 matches, she has posted a Rock-best 157 kills while ranking second on the team in both digs (219) and aces (17). Meanwhile, Abigail, a redshirt sophomore, leads Clarion in digs (303) and aces (25).
Â
Though not exclusive to SRU volleyball, another familiar last name to Slippery Rock athletics fans on the Clarion roster is Annie Koester, who is the sister of Rock starting quarterback Andrew Koester.
Â
BERGER CONTINUES STRONG RUN
Mary Berger continued her recent streak of solid play with an eight-kill, three-block showing against Tiffin. Berger is averaging 8.3 kills on a .236 attack percentage and 1.8 blocks per match over SRU's last four contests. Â
Â
Berger has earned significant playing time in seven matches this season and is now up to fifth on the team in blocks (12) and seventh in kills (46).
Â
PLENTY OF ATTACK OPTIONS
In addition to Selfridge and Berger, Slippery Rock has also received heavy contributions in its attack from
Chelsie Wheeler,
Alayna Chizmar,
Lauren Crytzer and
Abigail Koeller.
Â
Wheeler is second on the team in kills at 128 while Chizmar will more than likely become the third Rock player to eclipse the 100-kill mark for the season this weekend as she enters the IUP match with 98. Following a quite two matches, Chizmar responded with quality showing against Tiffin in which she supplied SRU with seven kills (.222). She is also tied for third on the team in aces with nine.
Â
Crytzer is in the midst of a career-year for the senior with 62 kills in addition to being a stalwart on The Rock's front lines with a team-high 39 blocks. Crytzer has had at least five kills and two blocks in each of SRU's last five matches. The middle hitter has compiled a .348 attack percentage during the five contests.
Â
Koeller, who is coming off of a team-best 10 kills against Tiffin, has now registered 47 kills in six matches this season.
Â
FELLARS AND GULLICKSON SPLIT WORK
The duo of
Taylor Fellers and
Peytan Gullickson handled The Rock's setting duties against Tiffin. Fellers started the match and passed out 20 assists while making 12 digs in the double-double showing. Gullickson came off the bench to tally 17 digs, serve one ace and come up with eight digs.
Â
SRU IN THE PSAC RANKINGS
Entering the weekend, Lachendro leads the PSAC West in digs while Crytzer ranks seventh in total blocks and Selfridge sits eighth in kills.
Â
LOKASH ON BRINK OF JOINING MORE ELITE COMPANY
Already the PSAC's all-time leader in wins and the 20th winningest coach in Division II history, Rock head coach
Laurie Lokash is once again on the brink of joining another elite group of NCAA volleyball coaches.
Â
With three more victories, Lokash will become the 80th coach in NCAA history, regardless of division, to reach 650 victories. For context, there are 4,760 coaches listed in the NCAA database of active and former head coaches.
