Rock men place 24th at Pre-Nationals

Slippery Rock placed 24th at the Rock Pre-Nationals Saturday at Schenley Park in the first preview of the 2018 NCAA Division II National Championship course.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's cross country team placed 24th at the Rock Pre-Nationals Saturday at the Bob O'Connor Golf Course at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh.
 
Slippery Rock hosted the meet that featured 32 NCAA Division II teams from 10 different states that traveled in to preview the course that will host both the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championships Nov. 17 and the NCAA Division II National Championships Dec. 1.
 
The third ranked Colorado School of Mines proved it is worthy of the high national ranking with a dominant performance to win the team title with just 19 points. The Orediggers placed all five scorers in the top eight positions and swept the top three spots for the convincing win. Mount Oliver and Queens tied for second with 119 points, followed by Cedarville in fourth with 158 points and Malone in fifth with 164 points. The top Atlantic Region team was Charleston (W.Va.) in eighth place with 206 points, while Edinboro was the top PSAC team in ninth place with 274 points. Slippery Rock finished 24th with 630 points.
 
A total of 29 teams recorded a score and 303 individual runners finished the 8,000-meter course.
 
Josh Rader was the top finisher for SRU in 113th place in 27:36. John Marenkovic was the next SRU runner across the line in 138th place in 27:59.
 
The Rock's scorers were capped by Andrew Maxwell in 146th in 28:03, Noah Yake in 191st in 28:43 and Trenton Yoder in 218th in 29:16.
 
Daniel Janyska was the sixth SRU finisher in 222nd in 29:20 and Tim Ferguson capped the top seven in 231st in 29:27.
 
Slippery Rock will take next week off before returning to action Nov. 3 at the PSAC Championships at Edinboro University.
