Rock volleyball set for Shepherd tournament

The Slippery Rock volleyball team is set to play three matches this weekend in Shepherdsville, W. Va.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team looks to improve its 3-4 overall record and get above .500 when it plays in a tournament held in Shepherdstown, W. Va. this weekend. Friday, The Rock will face Glenville State at 1 p.m. and host Shepherd at 8 p.m. followed by a match vs. Fairmont State Saturday at 3 p.m.

A brief preview of Slippery Rock's matches this weekend can be found below.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock enters the tournament this weekend in Shepherdsville, W. Va. with a 3-4 record. The team is coming off the Clarion Classic where it finished 2-1 and will play Shepherd and Fairmont State for the second time in as many weekends. Freshman Morgan Tyree leads The Rock in services aces with 11 and kills with 64. Senior Sarah Cadwallader has recorded 60 kills for a 2.14 kills per set average and defensive specialist Hannah McShea leads the team with a total of 113 digs in 28 sets played. Senior middle hitter Hayley Wilson has posted 27 blocks followed by Michelle Hren's 21. Setters Janna Reilly and Alexandra Fleagle both have more than 100 assists for The Rock.

Scouting the Pioneers: Glenville State, 1-6 overall, lost its first six matches of the 2012 season but are coming off a win against Ursuline in a tournament hosted by Kentucky Wesleyan last weekend. Juniors Heather Stout and Dejana Ludoski lead a young team that includes five freshmen as well as junior transfer Natalie Baumgartner. Ludoski had a team high 19 kills in the win vs. Ursuline and middle hitter Ella Messinger added 14 in the same match. Glenville was tabbed to finish 14th in the WVIAC Pre Season Coaches Poll.

Scouting the Rams: Shepherd is 4-4 overall heading into this weekend's tournament. It started its season with three straight wins at the Falcon Fest Tournament in Fairmont, W. Va. but has gone 1-3 since then. Meg Kenny leads the Rams with 57 kills and 2.28 kills per set while all-around player Kasey Mercier leads the team with 81 digs and is third in kills with 43. Senior setter Sara Michael is averaging 8.77 assists per set and has a total of 272 assists in her team leading 31 sets played.

Scouting the Fighting Falcons: Fairmont State played host to its own tournament to open the season, going 4-0 but are now 5-2 overall after last weekend and have lost two straight heading into the tournament. In the team's seven matches, junior Bri Swann has totaled 77 kills with a 2.75 kills per set average to add to her 90 digs. Not far behind Swann are Leslie Giordon and Amber Wilson with a total of 68 and 61 kills respectively. Tiff Smathers has 156 digs for a 5.57 digs per set average and setter Tabbie Bias is averaging just under 10 assists per set with 9.93 for Fairmont State.

Series History: Glenville State: SRU is 5-0 all time vs. the Pioneers. Their last meeting came in 2009 where The Rock outplayed GSC and won in straight sets, 3-0.

Shepherd: The Rock is 7-3 all-time vs. the Rams with their last meeting coming last weekend in Clarion, Pa. SRU beat Shepherd in a five set, back and forth match (25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 22-25 and 15-10). That was Slippery Rock's fifth win vs. Shepherd in its last six matches, including three straight.

Fairmont State: Slippery Rock has fared well against Fairmont State with a 16-3 overall record. Their last meeting came last weekend at the Clarion Classic where SRU edged the Fighting Falcons in a five set, come from behind thriller. The Rock won the first set 25-15 but faltered in the next two, losing 25-18 and 25-21. SRU then came from behind to win the next two sets and take the match.  Fairmont State is winless in its last 8 meetings vs. The Rock with its last win coming in 1999.

Head Coaches: Laurie Lokash is in her 29th season at SRU with an overall record of 547-422. She is the tenth winningest active coach in Division II and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Lokash has guided The Rock to 13 seasons with 20 or more wins, five PSAC-West titles and two PSAC overall championships. She is a 1984 graduate of Penn St. and played for Nittany Lion head coach Russ Rose.

Camai Roberson enters her second season as head coach at her alma mater Glenville State. She finished her first year at the helm of the Pioneers with a 6-27 overall record. Roberson graduated with a bachelor's degree in behavioral science and played three of her four-year volleyball career at Glenville State. She transferred from Wheeling Jesuit after her freshman year and became a three starter as well as an All-WVIAC performer at GSC.

Sarah Smith is in her seventh season at the helm for Shepherd. She was named WVIAC Coach of the year in 2009 after leading the Rams to a 21-12 overall record and a 12-2 mark in conference play. Smith was also named a Thirty under 30 recipient by the AVCA. Prior to coaching at Shepherd, she was a graduate assistant at Minnesota State Mankato. Smith was a four-year starter at Bryant College and helped the Bulldogs to four consecutive NCAA appearances. She earned her bachelor's degree in business administration at Bryant in 2003 and a master's in sports administration from Minnesota State Mankato in 2005.

The 2012 season will mark Larry Hill's 29th at Fairmont State where he's posted a 583-471 overall record. He ranks ninth in Division II for victories among active head coaches, just ahead of Lokash. The Fighting Falcons have posted 16 seasons with 20 wins or more, including each of the last two years under Hill. He has led the program, since its inception in 1984, to four WVIAC titles and was named WVIAC Coach of the Year four times. He is a Fairmont State graduate and earned his master's degree from West Virginia University in 1968.
