SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team and the SRU chapter of Active Minds will be teaming up Saturday when The Rock plays Edinboro at Morrow Field House to hold the school's first Spike Against Stigma match as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week.
Members from Slippery Rock's Active Minds club will be at the match to help erase the stigma associated with mental illness by raising awareness, educating people about mental health issues and promoting help-seeking. All the proceeds from the match are being donated to the group to help fund more programs that will bring awareness of mental illness to the Slippery Rock campus. Donations will also be accepted.
Junior volleyball player Sarah Cadwallade# has been the primary organizer of Saturday's fundraiser. The plan for Spike Against Stigma started after Cadwallader and her family suffered a personal tragedy.
"The idea originated because my brother committed suicide two years ago," said Cadwallader. "He suffered with mental illness throughout his life. I want to help Active Minds raise awareness of mental illness and suicide awareness at Slippery Rock through Saturday's match.”
Active Minds is a nationally recognized, non-profit, student-run organization dedicated to raising awareness of mental health issues and reducing the stigma associated with mental illness. Allison Malmon, a former student at the University of Pennsylvania whose older brother committed suicide, started Active Minds in 2001. Active Minds at SRU is the 224th chapter and is open to all students interested in promoting open, enlightened discussion of mental health and creating a better life for those who experience mental illness.
The match itself will pit two of the top teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Slippery Rock is 15-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference while Edinboro enters the match at 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the PSAC. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
