AKRON, Ohio –
Zach Gose broke his own Slippery Rock University record in the hammer throw to lead The Rock men's track & field team to five NCAA provisional marks across a pair of "Last Chance" meets this week at the University of Akron and Baldwin Wallace University.
Gose improved on his season-best and his own SRU program record in the hammer throw when he took second in the event at Baldwin Wallace with a throw of 62.16 meters. It narrowly topped his record of 62.12 meters from earlier this spring. Gose also finished fifth in the hammer at Akron a day before with an NCAA provisional of 60.60 meters. His new record of 62.16m currently ranks 19th on the Division II list this spring.
Â
The Rock got NCAA marks in three throws at Akron with
Seaton Wozniak taking fifth in the discus with a throw of 52.15 meters and
Joey Reed winning the javelin with a toss of 60.81 meters. Wozniak is headed to nationals in the shot put, while his season-best in the discus (52.27m) is currently No. 26 on the Division II list. Reed's top mark this spring (61.38m) is No. 47 on the Division II list in the javelin.
Â
SRU sent just four athletes to Akron with
Jason Alderson rounding out the team with a second place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 13.95 meters. Alderson was also 11th in the long jump at Baldwin Wallace (6.49m).
Â
The final NCAA mark of the week belonged to
Logan Gossard, who led a 1-2 SRU finish in the pole vault at Baldwin Wallace. He cleared a season-best of 4.89 meters to move up to No. 50 in the Division II list.
Christian Crowley was second with a season-best of 4.74 meters.
Â
Logan Turton took fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.90 meters to round out the field event entries at Baldwin Wallace.
Â
The Rock also sent four distance runners with
Nate Pitzer placing 24th in the 800-meter run (1:57.76) and
Eli Schreiber leading the way in the 5,000-meter run by breaking the 15-minute barrier in 14:59.50.
John Juszynski (15:20) and
Alex Morris (15:33) rounded out the 5K entries.
Â
This week marked the final chance to improve on any marks for the NCAA qualification process. SRU athletes that have met the NCAA standards in their events will find out next Tuesday if they are high enough on the declaration list to be accepted to compete in the National Championships May 21-23 in Kansas.
