Rock women sit fourth after day one at PSAC Meet

Savannah Schneck and Sydney Hale scored in the hammer and Carissa Flynn scored in the 10K to lead The Rock women's track & field team into fourth place after day one of the PSAC Championships Thursday from Shippensburg.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's track & field team picked up 10 points in two events on the opening day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships Thursday from Shippensburg University.
 
The Rock sit fourth in the team standings after the first of three days of competition after only the hammer throw and 10,000-meter event finals were contested Thursday.
 
Millersville jumped out to an early lead with 23 points. Shippensburg sits second with 13 poins, tied with West Chester. Slippery Rock is fourth with 10 points and Bloomsburg and California (Pa.) are tied with six points each.
 
SRU picked up points in both event finals Thursday with Carissa Flynn scoring in the 10,000-meter run and Savannah Schneck and Sydney Hale both scoring in the hammer.
 
Flynn took fifth in the 10K under the lights Thursday night with a strong run in 36:34.34 to score four points. Defending champion Ruthie Hughes was forced to step off the track after a nagging injury flared up past the midway point while she was running with the lead group.
 
Schneck led the way in the hammer with a fifth place finish and a throw of 47.99 meters. Hale took seventh with a toss of 46.98 meters to give SRU a total of six points in the event.
 
The first four events of the heptathlon also took place Thursday and all three SRU entries currently sit in the top five positions with three events to go. Leighanne Swan sits second with 2,751 points, trailing by just 51 points. Autumn Wyatt is fourth with 2,733 points and Maddy Miller is fifth with 2,716 points as just 86 total points separate the top five spots.
