SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Kanye Thompson broke the program record in the 100-meter dash and anchored the 4x100-meter relay to a school record to lead the Slippery Rock University men's track & field team to a third place finish in the team standings when the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships wrapped up Saturday evening from SRU's William Lennox Track.
Â
East Stroudsburg earned its first-ever men's outdoor team title after pulling away with 165.5 points, becoming the first team to unseat Shippensburg since Slippery Rock won the title in 2008. The Raiders won 15 straight men's outdoor titles from 2009-24, but settled for second place Saturday with 148 points. Slippery Rock took third with 126.16 points to earn its 11th straight top three finish. Lock Haven had a strong meet to take fourth with 99 points, followed by West Chester rounding out the top five with 64 points. A total of 13 teams recorded points at the meet.
Â
Joshua Gose took home one of the four individual awards handed out at the meet when he was named the PSAC Champion Scholar Award winner for the second year in a row for owning the highest GPA among all male athletes competing at the meet.
Â
Thompson led Slippery Rock Saturday and made an emphatic statement as the fastest man in PSAC history when he won the 100-meter dash in a blazing time of 10.13 seconds. The wind reading was above the 2.0 m/s limit, so it will not count for the all-time PSAC record, but it was below the NCAA qualification limit and will stand as the SRU record. Thompson ran the two-fastest 100-meter times recorded in PSAC history this weekend at 10.21 seconds in the prelims and 10.13 seconds in the finals. His time in the finals Saturday vaults him all the way up to No. 4 in the country this year and will guarantee him a trip to the National Championships.
Â
Thompson also anchored The Rock's 4x100-meter relay to a win for the third year in a row as he joined with
Nicholas Hartwick,
AJ Virata and
Matthew Crow to break the SRU record with a time of 40.46 seconds, topping the former record of 40.50 seconds set last spring and matched earlier this year. Hartwick was a late addition to the team after
Benny Whitaker, who has been the lead leg all year, was injured Friday during the meet.
Â
Virata earned All-PSAC honors in the 200-meter dash while running through an injury, taking second in the finals Saturday in 21.19 seconds, one day after running an SRU record 20.89 seconds in the prelims. Virata was also fifth in the 100-meter finals in 10.66 seconds. Crow tacked on four points with a fifth place finish in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.60 seconds to round out a strong showing by the SRU sprinters.
Â
Slippery Rock also scored in four more events on the track Saturday.
Joey Cintavey took fourth in the 1,500-meter run in 3:55.60.
Troy Hart was sixth in the 5,000-meter run in 15:17.34.
Cade Adams took sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in a season-best time of 54.04 seconds and
Owen Rindler jogged to a point in the 400m hurdles after suffering an injury in the prelims Friday. The 4x400-meter relay team of
Kadin Johnson,
Trey Huha,
Micah Good and
Kyle Rauchut closed out the meet by taking fourth in 3:16.05.
Â
Gose led the way in the field with a third place showing in the shot put with a throw of 16.96 meters, earning All-PSAC honors for the eighth consecutive season to close his career by finishing in the top three in the shot put in every PSAC indoor and outdoor championship he competed in.
Seaton Wozniak took fifth with a throw of 16.47 meters to give SRU 10 points in the event.
Â
Josh Kingerski and
Joseph Reed both scored in the javelin with Kingerski placing seventh with a throw of 57.48 meters and Reed finishing eighth with a throw of 57.01 meters.
Â
SRU's points were capped Saturday in the jumps with
Ian James placing eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 14.33 meters and
Grady Cobb and
Alex Cooper tying for eighth in the high jump with clearances of 1.95 meters.
Â
Saturday marked the conclusion of the season for most of the Slippery Rock roster, while those with NCAA provisional marks will now wait to find out if they are high enough on the declared entry list to be accepted to the national meet. SRU currently has seven men ranked in the top 25 nationally, including four in the top 15 (Thompson 4th in 100m,
Drew Layton 8th in pole vault, Wozniak 15th in shot put,
Logan Anderson 13th in decathlon). The NCAA will announce the accepted entries for nationals Tuesday evening. The national meet is set to take place May 22-24 at Colorado State Pueblo.
