PHILADELPHIA, Pa. –
Anna Igims broke the program record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and
Joshua Gose won the collegiate shot put to lead the Slippery Rock University track & field teams at the Penn Relays Thursday and Friday at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
Â
Slippery Rock sent just seven athletes to the Penn Relays this weekend with Igims running the steeplechase Thursday night and six throwers competing Friday.
Â
The senior distance standout opened the meet with a bang when she broke her own SRU record in the steeplechase with a time of 10:17.13, despite running off the front of her heat from the gun and running alone for the entire race. She took 12th overall from the second heat and was the top non-Division I finisher and only Division II athlete in the field. Igims broke her own record of 10:19.03 and jumped up one spot to No. 4 on the national leaderboard among Division II athletes this spring.
Â
Gose followed that up by leading The Rock men in the shot put Friday when he won the collegiate section of the event with a season-best and NCAA provisional throw of 17.46 meters, which is the second-best throw of his career and currently ranks No. 20 in Division II this spring. Gose landed two throws over 17 meters in the competition with his fifth attempt standing as the winner. Finishers 2-4 came from Notre Dame and Harvard as Gose topped a field that included 23 Division I throwers.
Â
The Rock men also got an NCAA provisional mark in the javelin from
Joseph Reed, who took fourth in the collegiate section of the event with a throw of 60.11 meters. He was beaten by three throwers from the Division I level and was one of only two non-Division I throwers to place in the top 10.
Josh Kingerski took 18th in the competition with a throw of 53.31 meters to cap the three SRU men's performances at Penn.
Â
Isabella Bartoletti led The Rock women on Friday with a career-best and NCAA provisional mark in the javelin as she took second in the collegiate section of the event with a throw of 44.20 meters. She was beaten only by a thrower from Princeton and she was the only non-Division I thrower to place in the top 10 in the event.
Â
Sarah Corrie and
Becca Martin rounded out the meet for SRU in the women's shot put with Corrie placing 18th with a throw of 13.73 meters and Martin finishing 23rd with a toss of 12.99 meters.
Â
The rest of the SRU team is split between two other meets this weekend with athletes competing at Shippensburg University Friday and Saturday and at Ashland University Saturday. Recaps from those meets will be posted Saturday night or Sunday morning.
