ASHLAND, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University men's track & field team recorded 15 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks, three NCAA provisional marks, two event wins, 26 top-10 finishes and one school record Saturday at the Ashland Invitational at the Niss Athletic Center at Ashland University.
Â
The school record came from
Matthew Crow, who broke his own SRU record in the 60-meter hurdles for the second time in two races this winter. He took second in the finals Saturday with a new career-best of 8.08 seconds, lowering his former record of 8.09 seconds from the first week of December.
Â
The Rock picked up two NCAA marks on the track with
Kanye Thompson winning the 60-meter dash with a personal best time of 6.73 seconds in his first race of the season. Thompson helped The Rock football team to the national semifinals during the fall and was making his indoor track season debut Saturday. His time of 6.73 seconds is the best in the PSAC and ranks No. 11 in all of Division II this season.
Â
The third NCAA provisional mark of the day came in another winning effort when
Joshua Gose took the top spot in the shot put with a toss of 16.63 meters to lead four SRU athletes to PSAC marks in the event.
Seaton Wozniak was second with a throw of 16.31 meters, followed by
Logan Parker in seventh with a mark of 14.62 meters and
Zach Gose in eighth at 14.53 meters.
Zach Gose also took fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 16.41 meters, where he was joined in hitting the PSAC standard by
Joshua Rohland in seventh at 15.86 meters.
Â
The only other PSAC auto mark in the field came from
Drew Layton, who took fifth in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.50 meters.
Â
Thompson led a trio of SRU athletes to PSAC marks in the 60-meter dash.
AJ Virata was ninth in 7.00 seconds and
Benny Whitaker was 10th in 7.00 seconds. Virata also took seventh in the 200-meter dash in 22.22 seconds and ran the lead leg of the sixth place 4x400-meter relay, where he joined with
Kyle Rauchut,
Micah Good and
Kadin Johnson to post a time of 3:19.88.
Â
Good also clocked a PSAC mark of his own in the 400-meter dash with a 10th place finish in 49.93 seconds. Johnson took fifth in the rarely contested 300-meter dash in 35.73 seconds.
Â
The final PSAC efforts of the day came from distance runners
Troy Hart and
Joey Cintavey in the 3,000-meter run. They both won their respective heats with Hart finishing seventh overall in 8:39.61 and Cintavey taking 18th in 8:49.85.
Eli Schreiber was 19th in 8:50.05, barely missing the PSAC automatic mark of 8:50.00.
Â
Slippery Rock was competing Saturday for the first time in a stretch of six weeks after taking a long break between the semesters. The Rock will now compete every weekend for the rest of the indoor track & field season, beginning next Saturday at Mount Union.
